NYINC 2016 Newps: Anglo-Saxon hammered coins

Well, I couldn't leave the NYINC show without an Anglo-Saxon hammered coin or two. I came across these two and thought they were a good fit for my collection. The descriptions are heavily plagiarized from CNG, which I think is fine since they are the sellers. image

The first coin is a tiny sceat of a type I hadn't encountered before. It looks very nice in hand, but these high-res images really accentuates *every* blemish on these tiny coins! In fact, the sceat is has a diameter about 60% of the ETC penny.).

ANGLO-SAXON, Primary Sceattas. Circa 680-710. AR Sceat (10mm, 1.13g). Series BZ, type 29. Mint in East Anglia.

Schematized facing head of Christ / Dove standing right on cross.

Ambramson BZ10 var. (annulet on rev.); Metcalf 139-9; North 131; SCBC 778. Good VF, toned.

The second coin is a slightly better type, from a better mint for the moneyer. And, has a nice provenance. (Picture from CNG.)

ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Edward the Confessor. 1042-1066. AR Penny (18mm, 1.09 g, 6h). Trefoil Quadrilateral type (BMC iii; Hild. C). Colenceaster (Colchester) mint; Stanmær, moneyer. Struck 1046-1048.

+ EDPE: ·RD REX :, diademed and draped bust left; trefoil-tipped scepter before / + ST?MÆR ON COL·?:, quadrilateral, with pellet in center and trefoils at angles, over voided short cross.

Freeman 73; SCBI –; Hild –; BMC –; North 817; SCBC 1174. Near EF, attractively toned. A very rare type for this mint, especially for this moneyer.

Ex G. V. Doubleday collection (Glendinings, 6 Oct. 1987) lot 101.
