$1,500,000,000.00 Powerball

Update: No Winner!!! Estimated at $1.3 BILLION now!!!

Funny thing is, if I won $10 to $15 million clear I could tell you exactly what I would do with that money and what I'd like to collect (pre-war sports, unopened, etc). $900 million, though, my goodness that's like $55,000/day for 30 years (if you take the annual payout after taxes) and I cannot even imagine what it'd be like to win that kind of money. I think I'd lose a lot if interest in sports cards to be honest. What's the fun when you can buy just about whatever you want?

Maybe I'd buy and bring back my old ECHL hockey team, The Richmond Renegades.

I know, for certain, that I'd help my family, friends and charities.

Anywho, good luck to all those here who are playing. How would a win like this change your collecting?

more than likely it would end my collecting. I'd be able to buy any card I wanted at any time thus eliminate the desire to do so.

    with that said...

When I first cashed the check I would no doubt buy unopened boxes of all sports from as early as possible to the mid 80's(up to 1988 in basketball).

I hope this won't be the case when I win but I'm kind of thinking it will, so I have to say... +1
I will let you guys know for sure as soon as I win!

I'd buy lots of unopened. Like enough to make 88 topps valuable.

I would buy partial ownership of the NE Patriots. Once I did I would fire Belechik, cut Brady and Gronk, sign Manziel and PacMan Jones, and get caught cheating 5 different ways so I lose draft picks for a decade. After that hopefully my Fins could win an AFC East title or two image
  • my collecting interests would change but I don't think they would disappear. It's still fun bringing pop 1's to the market. I would crack boxes/cases that are sure fire losing propositions monetarily just because I could

I would go to National and just stroll aisles and just buy whatever caught my eye.
    PackManInNC
  • First on my list is to find and buy a case of 1986 Fleer basketball and open every pack. Then a case of 1975 Topps baseball, 80-81 Topps basketball, 84-86 Football. Since I've never been one to buy PSA graded cards and only self-sub my entire collection, I would not lose interest in the collecting aspect. I've already let the wife know I will be opening case after case when we aren't traveling all over the world.
  • I would do this hobby a big favor and buy all the unopened baseball from 1986 to 1991 that is still out there and burn it!!!!

I would give a good portion away. I would make sure my extended family was taken care of unless they're totally foolish. I would seek every day people who need help. That would be my job. Of course, I would enjoy some of the money. Just would want to know the majority of it went to something worth while.

I think this is a fantastic answer - it is something I would aspire to as well. I think most of us have read the stories of lottery winners being broke in something like 5 years or something. I'd like to think I wouldn't be that guy. Yes, I'd like to be secure and have nice(r) things. But, there are so many hurting people out there who feel they have no hope. It'd be nice provide some.

If I were to be completely selfish, I would of course by all the PSA 10s of every card I want, but i would create one of the most bada** man caves ever! I'm talking finger print entry, climate controlled, etc. It would almost be like a museum. With that much money, it would be easy to do.

Not being selfish, i would give a lot to education (since I work in education), my family, church, and community. How cool would it be for my son to play on fields that were landscaped by the Angels field crew? There would be so many things that I could help with that much money.
  • I'd give a large amount to close family members. The rest (lump sum payment) I'd put in the bank or some other similar conservative investment. I'd try to keep the base amount the same and just live off the interest. I might even keep my current job (see how long that lasts) because I think you'd have to do something that'd keep you busy and active. Regarding card collecting, I'd probably do something similar to the Top 250 cards in the hobby. However, I wouldn't be doing any top all bids. I'd still try to keep some sort of a budget and not go crazy.

First thing I would do for sure.

Buy a place where I am surrounded by other surrounded by the rich and famous. When you have that much money you are a target but when you are surrounded by people that are rich and famous nobody would even look your way.

As for where I'd spend my money...

I'd would definitely want to work with people like Elon Musk on progressive ideas for the betterment of the future of mankind. Protecting rain forest, population control, progressive science, space exploration, climate change, etc.

I wonder how much 1988 Donruss you'd have to burn to raise the price up to $100/box?

If there is no winner tonight, we might be getting close to a lump sum, net of taxes, higher than the cost of buying every combination. I thought the odds are supposed to be around 290,000,000::1.

If you're suggesting that someone should buy every possible combination, that would take a lot of coordination, people, time, and it could result in a loss. There probably wouldn't even be enough time.

BTW, it has been tried before, on a much smaller scale:

"In February 1992, an Australian consortium tried to corner a $24 million Virginia Lotto jackpot. But the group was only able to purchase 2.4 million of the 7 million combinations before time ran out."

Good point. Not only that, at this point, even if you did manage to cover all combinations, the volume of tickets sold would most likely produce an additional winner.

I wonder how long it took them to buy the 2.4 million tickets?

Also, all tickets must be bought with cash.

    image

You know perfectly well that we don't have $394 million in cash.

A debit card is effectively cash as you can only spend what is in your account.<<span class="FTHighlightFont">

Odds are approximately 292M::1 at $2 a pop would be $584M. Current cash value is $868M on the $1.4B annuity. See jtlee123's link below. Forgot about winning the other prizes, the additional build of prize and the deductibility of the losing tickets.

The odds and current cash value are from the Powerball website.
  • MULLINS5MULLINS5 Posts: 4,517 ✭✭✭
Actually, most places will accept a debit card for lotto now.

  • I seem to recall hearing it would be 585 million combinations. Taxes of course takes a huge cut but if you have to share it even with one person, you're behind.
  • It's still a risk. Even if you buy 585 million combinations and you win. You still run the risk of a few others also having the winning ticket and it being split.
  • jtlee321jtlee321 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭✭✭
You do run a risk of the jackpot being split. But you also have all of the additional lower value prizes. A news station in Virginia posted This story about how much you would win if no one else won the jackpot and you bought every possible winning combination. The jist of it is before taxes and after the discount of the lump sum payment, you would have won $1.16 Billion. After federal taxes that would be $823,600,000.00. Then you would be able to write off the non-winning tickets as a gambling loss. So all said and done you would be sitting at around $993 Million after federal taxes. That's assuming no one else won. Not bad at all.. LOL
  • Im still hearing 240 and 290 million combination. Plus the losing tickets could be worth up to a million bucks also,. 5 numbers got a million last one.

Ok. So lets divy it up and split the number combinations. Who will buy 000000 to 010000? Sign up fast. Closes at 999999. Dont want to be left out and "that guy" and try to sue us for your cut later.

Take that number and double it as a ticket is two bucks. Heard at a ticket per second, it would take 9 years to get all combinations

You could be a thrill seeker and buy all the combinations except one. How hilarious would it be if the one you skipped was the winner. Oops.

I think if I came away with $500 + Million after taxes I would create the most insane YouTube channel ever. I would buy different high end collectibles from cars, comics, sports cards, artwork etc. and go to town via requests from those who are subscribed to my channel destroying them in the most requested method. Amazing Fantasy #15.... cover in honey and let a bear have its way with it CGC case and all. 1952 Mantle PSA whatever.... shot out of a cannon into a brick wall, multiple times if necessary. Lamborghini Aventador.... Drop it from a mile or so in the air out the back of a cargo plane. High end "manufactured" Panini or Topps sports cards like superfractors and other 1/1s that sell for dumb amounts. Wipe my a... You get what I mean. Quite a bit older. Just pointing out the fact that this kind of money is beyond life changing and is getting into the range of stupid money.

But based on someone wondering if I am a child because of what I would do with a few million that would be gained back with proper investments each year to make folks go WTF it would be well worth actually doing the above.

If I somehow end up winning I will let you have the first pick on what high value collectible gets demolished along with the method of destruction sir.

I'd give away my entire collection to a few of the guys on this forum. Then I would go out and buy the nicest run of MANTLES in PSA "8" that I could find and they would be the only cards in my collection.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I'm not trying to start anything here. I just find the desire to destroy valuable items very childish. Especially when you could be helping others with that money instead. But to each their own.

As far as picking which collectible to destroy and how, I would refuse to pick one. I think it would be better to pick a high end collectible and then let people choose whom to bestow it on. In the long run, that would be an immensely more popular YouTube channel. Not to mention the press picking up on your channel and advertising it for you.

Destroying items would only lead to people hating you for being one of the spoiled rotten rich people in the world who don't deserve the money they have. This of course is just my opinion.

I'm sure realize most people think collecting cards is pretty childish. And I think you may be taking his comment a little to seriously, this is a fantasy "what would you do with the money" thread. Dude wants to drop Lambo's out of planes, not sure that deserves multiple rebuttals.

Maybe 20-30 miles. One of the women I work with lives right by the 7/11 that sold the ticket. I've read it was a 62 year old nurse that won and that she was given the ticket by her boss who bought thousands of tickets that he gave out to his employees.
