My $100 1934 LGS set ...

... started exactly two years ago: I've bought my first $100 1934 LGS note!

Beside the $1000 notes this denomination is my favor! I can't say why, I just like the $100 note and it's one of the most known Dollar notes around the world.

Back that time I didn't plan to start a district set, I just wanted one example of each denomination in LGS (and DGS too, although I've stopped collecting these notes some time later).

So I was searching for a nice $100 1934 LGS note and finally found this one in January 2014!

image

I didn't know much about the market prices at that time, so I'm afraid I've paid too much, but this note is still the highest graded $100 LGS in my set, so in retrospect it doesn't really matter.

The seller was denoms (thank you, Jess!) and many of my early LGS notes I've bought from him.

That is a "VERY NICE" example !! Good O' BEN !!!!

I just for whatever reason just get break away from the $2's, $5's and $10's. God forbid that I actually moved up in the world to another denomination. I would most likely eat a bullet after a year or so.

Got enough frustration finding what I need now for my collections - LOL

    Thank you, John!

I think I know what frustration is...

I've hoped I could get some fine LGS notes, either $5 or $10 or $20 or $50 or $100, at the FUN show!

But these notes have been "close to non-existent" as a dealer said to me. Only numbersman has some for sale and I already bought the nicest - IMO.

So where are they? I want LGS! And there are none? That's really frustrating!

    I know exactly the feeling.

I have LOTS of LGS notes in my collection. My problem is that since I collect "All Blocks, All Star's, All varieties) that some of the LGS notes are just no where to be found. On the good side, they do exist !! Maybe 1-2 known, but that leaves hope in my mind.

A lot of the DGS notes are in the same boat if not tougher in some cases.

Here is a PERFECT example of my issues. I searched for the following note for over 15 years in anything better than the FINE notes that were known to exist and I had seen. When this note was offered to me, it took all of about 2 seconds to buy it !! I bought is RAW last year and was fond in a Las Vegas hoard of various notes !!!

Since posting it last year, I get a call or email at least once every month asking If I would sell it. My answer like always of course is "NO" There is "NO" L-STAR that even comes close to this note and i have seen most of them over the years.

    ENJOY, Once Again Posted !!

  • Congratulations!

    That's the real thing!

I would never ask easily a collector if he would sell a note! Simply because I would never sell one of my notes I can't understand anything else than to deny such an offer!

But maybe it's better you wouldn't show me more such nice LGS notes. In the end I MUST ask you even when I don't want it...image

Amrys, this note will go to sale the second I find a better one but I think we know how long that could take for this specific note.

There are some HUGE San Francisco district collectors on here that would buy this note without blinking an eye and they have asked about it.

In my book, out of the thousands of notes I own, very few are 100% NOT FOR SALE. The others, if I find a decent upgrade, I would sell the note currently in the collection.

Most people know that I DO NOT keep duplicate notes around very long

    Chapter 2:

After I bought that $100 1934 LGS Richmond note early in 2014 I've negotiated with a seller from North Dakota. He had some more LGS notes for sale in his inventory and some new graded LGS too.

To my surprise a $100 1934 Minneapolis was among these notes, he has just got back from grading and before he could offer them at his website I've already bought this fine note.

    Here it is!

    image

So I was able to add a second $100 1934 LGS note to my set.

Now, don't your hopes up on the L-STAR. There is quite a line in front of you wanting this note and besides, being a betting man that I am. I will guess it will be quite some time before mine actually gets upgraded.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to upgrade it tomorrow if a note was available. But there lies the problem is that this is the best out there so far !!

    Two things about Rock-

First, if you consider the amount of notes that he needs to "complete" his collection the fact that he would ever get frustrated let's you know very quickly what an incredible collection he has.

Second, you can call me anytime about the $5 SC that you upgraded. I am still waiting for the "lower" note.

I know this well, so I didn't get you wrong. I have no illusions concerning the L-star, don't worry. Of course there is a line of interesting collectors and friends and I would be the last one to question this. In fact I don't collect the LGS stars intensively. Not yet. But thank you for the explaining words!

What I really enjoy is that you're so active in the CU again! It's much fun to talk with you and the others here and I hope that you're a little diverted from your misery you've mentioned! That would make me happy!

    Thanks Amrys.

It's good to be back, even if it's not completely back to the way it was.

Got a few more "BIG" hurdles coming up over the next 2 months. God willing and everything goes as planned. I should be in full recovery and back to normal by the end of March !!

    Finger crossed !!!

Great LGS notes!! The $100's and $5 are beauties! Amrys, a completed district set of LGS $100's will be amazing and a great compliment to your $1000 set. Will a $10 set be next on the list? 1000, 100, 10 ...that would be cool!!!

Actually I'm building sets of all lower denominations, but the $100 LGS notes are - beside the $1000 - my favor.

But I'm afraid it will take some time to complete these sets. There aren't many nice LGS notes offered...

  • $100 LGS Chapter 3...

After the purchase of the two $100 bills I've hunted more the $1000 notes and less the lower denominations.

But about five month later, in May 2015, a forum member offered me some nice LGS notes. I couldn't buy all notes I need, because of the expensive additions to my $1000 LGS set, but finally one note was simply a must. An Atlanta $100 1934 LGS as you can see here:

    image

I was very surprised to learn that Atlanta is one of the toughest districts. This PMG 64 EPQ is the best known at both services! Additional there are only three more notes known in unc: Two PMG 64 without EPQ and a single PCGS 63 PPQ. What a key note for a $100 1934 LGS set in unc!

As some of you may already expect, it was numbersman who sold me this fantastic and unique note! Thanks to Robert for this beauty!

  • luckybucksluckybucks Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭
    Nice notes.

The early 1934 series notes IMO have so much to offer. The regular blocks are all possible in CU, but many of the star blocks have no notes known above VF or EF.

The earlier LGS printings have the most vivid seals (IE 1934 $5000 and $10,000 notes), but the earlier printings seem to be much harder to track down.

Can't wait to see more LGS notes amrys. Keep up the good work.
  • The next note I've found was this nice KC:

    image

There are many 2152-J out there, most of them in one serial number range, so it wasn't difficult to get one. Last year some were offered at Heritage, very often in 63, some in 64 and a few better.

But this one is another KC from the Thomas M. Flynn Collection. It was love at first sight!image

    That was chapter 4...
  • The story continued...

After a few weeks with no interesting $100 note I saw that TT offered a Chicago in nice shape and unc at eBay. Of course I tried to get it in the auction, but I underestimated the situation. So I was - you surely already presume right - the underbidder!

What a shame, one chance in weeks and then the result was: YOU LOST!

But then a surprise: TT owned another $100 LGS Chicago note, even better (IMO) than the first one. Not always you'll get a second chance and an even better one, so I grabbed it!

    image

And that was the story of my fifth note in this set, and gladly it was a story with a happy end!image

  • $100 LGS notes - Episode 6

This nice St. Louis was the next addition to my set. I was surprised to see that this 63 PPQ was relatively good centered and so I bought it last year.

It was once in a wrong holder, as a 2152-G, but that mistake was corrected at the last FUN show in January!

    Regardless, sweet note!

    I've seen many 64s that don't look that nice....unless there's an issue with the reverse,this note's undergraded(imo).

  • Hello Tiger and numbersman!

    Thank you!image

    Here's the back!

    image

I think that this note should be a 64 PPQ, but that's only my humble opinion!

  • TigerTraderTigerTrader Posts: 249 ✭✭✭
There are reasons they could have appropriately given this one a 63PPQ but in a holder and not in hand it would likely be very difficult to locate... I would love to see the graders notes on this one because I don't see a 63 from the margins or registration.

I guarantee you this: If that note is in a dealers case at a show... He isn't going to sell it for 63PPQ money...image
  • luckybucksluckybucks Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭
No way is that a 63. IMO it has a shot at 65, but is at least a 64 all day.
  • SmallSizedGuySmallSizedGuy Posts: 503 ✭✭✭
Probably net graded. Looks like handling to the right of the district seal and to the right of the Treasury seal.

    Lots of great notes, amrys.

As for the last one, looks very nice, and as many have said, arguably undergraded. Well done!

I don't think it's net graded. The handling is - compared with notes in 64 - not bad enough.

Beside the centering I don't see any reason why this note is "only" a 63. Marc Michaelsen has examined this note too and told me it's one of the best 63 PPQ notes he has ever seen.

So I've learned that the range of the grade 63 is a bigger one. I've seen some notes in 63, which were really bad centered, and now I know a few with a nearly 64 centering like this $100 1934 LGS ST. Louis note. In the end - as always - we should buy the note and not the holder!

It's possible that I will try to get an upgrade, maybe after I've completed the set, but actually this doesn't really matter. I'm glad that I've got that note!

But by the way I must confess: I wasn't too sad that this note is in a 63 PPQ holder, because the price for this beauty was so of course a cheaper one...image

  • Chapter 8:
As already shown in another thread I've found online a new addition to my set:
A nice $100 1934 LGS New York note!

Ok, it's only a 63 EPQ, but the centering for a 63 is very good, I'm happy with this note.

    image

That was the eighth note, but there is one more thing...
  • ... few weeks ago I couldn't resist to buy this note:
    A $100 1934 LGS Dallas.

Numbersman has already shown this note in the CU before. Since I've seen this Dallas I couldn't forget it...

So I finally took the chance to get it early this year. Thanks to Robert!

That's the ninth note of the set. Still three to find...

    End of Chapter 9.
