the 1794 Head of 1794 S-25 is not listed in the PCGS Price Guide ?

Probably the same reason the price guide doesn't

    list

    S-27

    S-36

    S-42

    S-48

    S-52

    S-59

    S-64

    N-3, N-4, N-7 & N-9

I would guess the prices realized base isn't large

enough to state a good price. Just a guess.

There are many 1794 Sheldon varieties considered "Head of 1794." The price listed in the PCGS price guide will reflect the most common varieties in this head type, such as S-22, S-31, or S-44. S-25 is not one of the most common varieties of the Head of 1794, so I would expect it to command at least a modest premium, depending on the grade. You would really have to go by sales records and dealer asking prices for the S-25 because pre-1800 large cents are collected by die marriage by a large number of people, and the exact die marriage DOES matter. Check the Heritage archives and search on S-25.

I appreciate the replies very much, especially your synopsis, rhedden. I see that the Heritage archives mostly consist of sales of higher quality pieces than the one I have (which has a basic Sheldon ranking of R3). It appears that the variety value increases almost exponentially in ascending grades from VF. This coin would probably net as G+, but the separated date feature is notable enough to make it a very interesting and plainly visible marker. Apparently, this obverse is unique to the S-25 die pairing, which may not be unusual relative to all other 1794 Flowing Hair cent die pairings, but noteworthy anyways.

I'm guessing the other posters answered the basic question, but if you
are looking for a source of all the varieties, the Copper Quotes by Robinson guide, now replaced with a new price guide who's name escapes me,
lists prices of all large cents by date and variety in different grades.
I don't know if the grades Scudzy, Average, and Choice in the Robinson guide have been replaced in the new guide or not.

Was the S-"25" painted red by chance?

I am far from being a specialist of any series of coinage, but I would agree with the aforementioned that not all of the varieties are listed, especially when they are continuously being updated. Only the strong over "normal" value varieties would be listed.

deuce, the separated date obverse is not unique to the Sheldon-25 variety. It is found on S-25, S-26, NC-8 and NC-11. If you go to the Heritage website, hit auction archives, hit Large Cents, and then type in S-25,and then hit Search, you will see many examples of S-25 that Heritage has sold in many different grades.

The currently available pricing guide is William C. Noyes/Penny Prices, and he uses the S, A-, A+, C designators. He prices coppers according to two (his) condition census groups. If you want to see what large cents in his CC look like, read his six-volume set on large cents.
