Charter numbers on type 1s were printed with the same ink used for the bank titles. This ink was easily removed during circulation, such that redemption agencies had difficulties determining banks of issue for some very worn notes.
The remedy was to print a second pair of charter numbers in the same, more permanent ink used for the treasury seal and serial numbers.
