Griffey and Piazza are Hall bound

Both definitely deserving. Griffey got a record 99.3% of the vote. Blows my mind that some writers are so obstinate.

Bagwell and Hoffman fall a little short. Maybe next year.

  • Sad day for Tommy Lasorda, knowing Piazza wants to be inducted as a Met.

I imagine the buildup of excitement and anticipation for the ceremony should make this summer's Cooperstown party quite memorable.

Wow, is this confirmed? I would have certainly thought he would have gone LA with the Lasorda connection.
  • I think Jeter is the only one who can compete with Griffey as far as the percentage but both well deserved. Griffey was the biggest lock for the HOF in recent years.

Now they should put all the other steroid guys in the hall.

Yeah. L.A. Times Sports has a front page story today. He prefers to go in as a Met or as nothing at all. The bitterness over his treatment by Big Corporate Daddy Fox will never go away. Too bad. He was a great Dodger, too.

I'm pretty sure the HOF decides what hat the player will wear on their plaque. I'm sure the player can give their opinion but I know Dawson wanted to be a Cub but was put in as an Expo.

Indeed, this is true, but you must consider the body of work throughout the career of each player. The majority of Dawson's statistical accomplishments occurred while he was an Expo. Personally, I liked him much more as a Cub.

Piazza had a slightly greater overall statistical career with New York and played for them in a World Series, so he will probably get his wish.
  • Now's the time to get top dollar for your Griffey's and Piazza's! I know I've capitalized!

Grew up watching both of these guys. Well deserved. Just booked the hotel rooms, will be seeing them get inducted in cooperstown this June

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Wow, that's impressive. Nothing against Griffey at all as he is certainly a HOF'er, but I wasn't sure anyone would ever beat Seaver's HOF % ballot. Good for him. I agree it will be interesting to see if Jeter can break Griffey's record now.

I love Jeter, and he's a true HOFer, but he's not more deserving than Griffey.

I agree. Writers get off your high horse and vote for these guys.

Mariano in 2019 could be the one, jeter will most likely get around 95% due to fielding decline.
Previous transactions: Wondercoin, goldman86, dmarks, Type2
  • I agree. NY stigma has Jeter way up there. He's a 1st Ballot guy, but I think he gets around 95-97%.

Disagree. Mariano is a first ballot, that I will agree with, but he's a closer. Mid 90's, percent-wise. Even if he is the best one of all-time, there are many writers that (correctly in my mind) dont see closers as nearly as important as starters or everyday players.

How can someone possibly hold a job as a sports writer that permits you HOF vote and then not vote for players like Seaver or Maddux in their first year?

Also, while neither will threaten to set a voting record, I wonder who ends up with a higher % in their 1st year, Chipper vs. Mariano?

I would much prefer keeping the steroid guys out of the Hall. Guys like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa would have never had the careers they had without the giant help of steroids. Mark McGwire at best w/o steroids was Dave Kingman. That is not a knock on Kingman as he had a solid career but nobody is pounding down the door of the hall of fame for Dave Kingman.
  • Kingman was no Mcgwire....you cannot be serious. Both 16 years Big Mac 140+ more HRs.

Take away the steroids, though, and that 140+ HR edge evaporates.

Kingman had 32 homers at the all star break in 1976. If not for injury that season could have been immense.

I agree, when these guys did PED's they not only enhanced their careers they also diminished other clean players records. I am saddened by those of you who want to put these guys in the HOF, an honor that has as much to do with sportsmanship as statistics. McGwire might not have been as good as Kingman.

    Mark McGwire

    1986-1992 (pre steroids)

    3123 AB's

    772 Hits

    .247 AVG

    220 HR (1 HR per 14.20 AB)

    1993-2001 (Juice)

    3064 AB's

    854 Hits

    .279 AVG

    363 HR (1hr per 8.44 AB)

Now if you factor in the averages of the first half of McGwires career (pre steroid) into the 2nd half you get these numbers...

    .247 Average, 6187AB, 1530 Hits, 435 Home Runs.

Dave Kingman's line looks like this....

    .236 Average, 6677AB, 1575 Hits, 442 Home Runs.

    Near identical.

Not a bad career by any means but you can see the difference PED's make. This is example #1 why PED use should be taken into consideration in terms of entry to the Hall of Fame. In my opinion at least it qualifies as almost disrespectful to have someone like McGwire in the HoF with his 583 HR's next to someone like Frank Robinson who did the same without.

I'm surprised Piazza got in before Bonds and Clemens, but hopefully next year these guys will get in.

I am and always will be very, very interested in the Baseball HOF conversation.....but it's sad on these boards with the deflection of the thread turns to who shouldn't be in.......when two players were just elected by the BBWAA. They got elected - believe it or not, there are many more shady characters in the BBHOF than any player who some might suspect took PED's. A very deserving HOF'er named Ty Cobb comes to mind - if he played and acted in the same manner as he did today way back in his day - do you think he'd get elected? Most importantly, if ya want to attack an area, attack the BBWAA & the process, not the results - or lack their of.
