Re-Holdering Questions

I recently obtained a card that has noticeable frosting on both corners on top. It is the new style holder, and the structural integrity of the holder seems completely intact. The card appears to be as it should be.

Furthermore, it's not exactly a '52 Mantle that would justify shenanigans, with a value of only a couple hundred bucks.

Assuming the holder just sustained some minor damage, my question is this: if I send the card in for re-holdering, is that automatic at the same grade, or could PSA see the frosting, determine the holder was tampered with, and do something other than re-holder it as a 10? What if anything might they do? Thanks for any info.

  • In all probability, it will be reholdered without issue. From the look of it, the card is undamaged and the frosting is minor. That amount of frosting is actually fairly common, even on new slabs without sustaining any damage.

If there is an issue, PSA has a guarantee, but I don't think that it would apply since the card was properly graded but damaged outside of their possession. Thus, it would likely be between you and the seller to resolve.

I wouldn't re-holder it due to esthetic concerns, I'm just afraid if I ever sold it the frosting would raise concerns for potential buyers. As we see here everyday, folks have gotten fairly paranoid about this stuff....
