Amazing Civil War Newspaper : August 29, 1862 S O L D

It is off-topic, but it has so many references to what and why we collect I found it irresistible and I hope you do as well.

This is an amazing 100% authentic August 29, 1862 New York Evening Post. It has been carefully conserved for over 150 years and is in remarkable condition. I've never seen a civil war era newspaper so bright white and legible, let along intact and complete. It is crammed full of the most interesting facts and tidbits of information.

When unfolded, it is a massive single sheet more than 50 inches across and over 30 inches tall. That's 10 square feet! It would make a world-class framed centerpiece to a collection room.

The creases are not distracting, I suspect it could be professionally mounted and most of the folds mitigated quite well. And the paper retains the feel of soft vellum. It's not at all brittle or crinkled. You can feel the intaglio print as you run your fingers across its surface. The edges are mostly clean and straight, with only a very few small tears and one 1/2 dollar sized cut on one fold that looks like it could be flattened and would almost disappear.

Topics include Pope's Army, Brigadier General Busteed, Colonel Berdan's call for Sharpshooters, Confederate train robberies, General Butler in New Orleans, the lost treasure of the steamship Golden Gate, slavery, the fate of the Union, and so much more. I've attached images a few of the dozens of headlines and articles which will fascinate you for hours. The link at the bottom contains even more but still only a fraction of the topics covered in this historic document.

Asking $68 shipped.

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.
