Why is this Clemente RC only a PSA 7?

Hi guys,

I have been thinking about sending in for a review and was curious to everyone's thoughts. Sure looks and presents nicer than a 7 to me and was wondering what you all think. The print issue in the lower right bottom is the only thing I potentially see but have seen others graded higher with the same flaw.

Front top left corner and the edge less than in inch to the right of that?

Print mark in the bottom right as you pointed out. I think worth the risk for sure to try.

The centering is so nice. If I had that kind of money, I would love to have that in my Clemente collections.

There's also the print line above "outfield" that, while fairly common for this card, seems more pronounced than usual.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Card had nice eye appeal. Seems to be very tough to get bumps on high dollar cards like this. Not sure, but I was led to believe that higher dollar cards get additional scrutiny when submitted for grading or review. The same grading standards apply, but if multiple graders are involved with such cards then perhaps there is more chance of an opinion about a subjective criteria holding the card back because there are more people involved in the processing?

Would be interesting and useful for us to understand if the grading process was identical regardless of what card it is and, if not, then what additional rigor or steps are taken with some cards.

The top left corner is barely touched but that should not keep the Clemente out of an 8 holder in my opinion. I would think a bump is in order for that card.

The two lower right print marks keeps it a 7.

Did you submit is with "NQ"? It looks like a PDA 8 (PD) to me because of the black mark. I have PSA 8 that looks very similar (below), but instead of the black line, it has a white print dot under the "e" in Pirates, and a small smudge just NE of "Clemente". I think that is what kept mine from an 8.5. The 2 cards look pretty similar though.

    Thanks guys for the input...

I looked through about twenty VCP past sales for PSA 8s pictures and didn't find any with this print spot so am assuming that is why it was graded a 7. It did look better than many of the graded 8s I saw print spot or not.

To answer another question...I did not sub this card myself but purchased as is several years back as is.

I think PSA used good judgement here. Card does not look sharp enough to be a 9PD which would be the same as a straight 7, an 8PD would translate to a straight 6, that wouldn't be fair IMO, so I guess 7 is a fair grade. Maybe 7.5, but if I had a nice 8 with no print problem, I wouldn't feel this card was nice enough to rate the same grade.

As always, the scans here don't always give us a good enough image to properly evaluate the card. A question I would ask is are the corners on the left side of the card sharp? They look slightly "blunted".

    Beautiful card!

Yes print defects to a minor extent. However they are common on this card.

Top left corner has a touch.

Nice card. I can see this in an 8 holder. Well worth several bump tries IMO.

I am not an expert on this card, but even if print defects are common, they should count against the grade. With the combination of a fairly significant print defect and at least one touched corner this card is a 7 or 7.5 at best. Just because it has superb centering doesn't mean the other problems cease to exist.

Of course a lot depends on the grader, I think the card could get an 8 depending on the grader and with the value of the card being what it is, it's certainly worth a try or three. I still wouldn't be surprised if it came back a 6 or 6.5, but that's the gamble you take on a card like this. According to PSA's grading standards an 8 can have slight fraying on one or two corners and a minor printing imperfection. My eye is drawn to the print defect pretty quickly, it's not a major imperfection, but I would not call it a minor defect, this is where it gets subjective.

Good luck if you send it in again!!!
