1986 Football Boxes-- Why So Expensive?

What's up with the prices of 1986 football boxes? I've seen FASC boxes sell for up to $2200. PWCC has a cello box and a not FASC wax box listed now. Both are clean non Xed out boxes. The wax box is at $1800 and the cello is at $1075. I thought I over paid for my cello box when I bought it.

  • Probably because the 10s are selling for insane amounts of money.

also, 17 cards per pack times 36 packs equals 612 cards per wax box. Set size is only 396, so you ahve a good shot of getting 2 Rices and 2 Youngs per box. Rice and Young each sell for about $500 in a 9. You have other HOF rookie cards. And if you were lucky to get any 10s on a Young or Rice you hit the jackpot. Even 10s of Elway and Montana are pricey.

so its one box that probably is worth people buying and ripping. Though of course most times you wont get your money back, but on a pack per pack basis, alot of cards can you can pull and potentially get a nice score if you hit some 9s or 10s

I understand the prices of high grade cards can be very high but 95% of the people buying these will never open the boxes.

I think they're hoping the 9s and 10s go up in value, thus their box will as well. Probably the logic most unopened collectors follow.

Single legit wax packs can be had for $25, so that's a 100% premium for a FASC wax box. It seems like an unsupportable premium to me.

I have a 1986 Topps FB Cello factory miswrap lot I bought from D&A a few years ago. The packs have a few cards less than the normal cello - as little as 2 less and as much as 10 less.

There are three packs that have a Rice, Young, and Smith on the back. I just kept it as more of an oddity but might give a whirl on ebay.

Good thing I got my 1986 set several years ago! But in addition to the Rice RC, don't forget that I'm pretty sure there are far less football cards made than baseball cards, and that's got to be especially true for unopened stuff (prior to 1990 or so hardly anyone even cared about football/basketball cards, right?). And on top of that I personally think 1986 is a very nice football appropriate design. image

  • There's a reason 10's sell for so much...because they are insanely tough! Years ago I broke down a rack case that I got for under a grand just to itch the scratch and was lucky enough to pull a couple Rice 9's but the surface issues are almost unavoidable...they made centering and corners/edges seem easy

Makes that lone X-out box Steve had at the National for $800 look like a steal. Still kicking myself for not getting it when I first saw it!

I chose to get a BBCE 1984 box about 4-5 years ago thinking it had better rookie cards. I think the 1986 has since double the gains in an '84 box. But don't get me wrong the 84 box has done nicely too, but wish I had chosen the 86 box.

I think the argument can be made that the 1984 set does have the better RC class. I believe what is driving the 1986 set is that it is slightly more condition sensitive due the the colored borders vs. the white borders. This makes the Rice and particularly the Young RC in 10 astronomically high for relatively modern cards (remember we would refer to 1987 Topps baseball as junk wax and that was put out one year later). Look at the spread between a Young 10 and a Young 8, it is about 3 decimal places $15,000 vs $15.

WOW. Here we go again. These boxes are going up. BBCE has wax boxes at $2500 and $3800 FASC. This is nuts.
Love those 70's - early 80's packs and boxes...send me a message if you are selling because I am buying
