Most de-valued card

What is your most de-valued card, in terms of value or popularity? Mine is one that was flying high at one point, but then....

  • The 1996 Sports Illustrated for Kids Tiger Woods PSA 10 went from like $100,000+ to like $5,000 or less. Pretty nuts.

Not mine, but the 96 SI for Kids Tiger Woods PSA 10 has to be the winner. $125K at one point, down to $3K in recent sales.

ETA: Oops, sportscardtheory beat me to it.

My personal biggest goof would also be the '85 McGwire, although I only bought PSA 9s ($400 at the time) and BGS 9s ($700-$1100 depending on subs) when the card was at its peak. By the time I bought my PSA 10 they were already down to about $900. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think at their peak a PSA 10 was about $6500. They bottomed out at about $500, but now that card in PSA 10 is still worth about $750, give or take.

My biggest mistake was not actually buying the McGwire card, but rather not selling them as soon as the card started to tank in value. Live an learn.

I read in the 100th issue of Beckett when they did 100 most notable baseball cards of all time and one was 1989 Upper Deck Jerome Walton which apparently went from $15 to 15 cents practically overnight. Ouch.

I remember in 1998 Beckett reported that a collector bought two of the Griffey Fleer showcase cards for $30,000.

It was the non-auto Superfractor and it's peak value was a $25k sale. Relatively speaking that's not a crazy price still today. The card created a craze in the hobby, brought thousands of collectors in, and cemented Chrome as modern king. The rest of his career not withstanding the card has legs to be in the $10k range on it's notoriety alone.

The auto super has not surfaced to my knowledge other than the fact it popped in the BGS report two years ago. It most likely either A.) Was pulled just before the redemption expired and sold to someone like Wossa in a dark sale, or B.) was never redeemed and was submitted by Topps.

My vote would be Jeremy Lin RPA's. The most common versions were pulling $3k-$5k during the mania and are likely $200 cards now at best.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

All my Roger Clemens '91 Topps Desert Shield cards. Everything from PSA 8-10. All took a huge nosedive compared to what I paid for them.
  • Jeremy Lin cards were ridiculous.

The one i can think of that i still own is a Steve Francis SP Rookie I bought for $50

The card was so hot at one time it might have booked at least $500 I cant remember exactly. Anyway he cooled off and I figured it was still a good buy at $50 - How much lower could it go? well raw its about 5 bucks now

Great one. That card was like $20,000+ or something? Now it's probably $50.

Wasn't the PSA 10 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany Bonds selling for like $3,000 at one time? It's probably about 10% of that now.

How about this, the 1986 Donruss Canseco RC, one of the most famous cards of the 80s and in the very early 90s peaked at a little over $100. Today you can get a whole factory set of 1986 Donruss for no more than 15%-20% of that.

The 1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa jumped up pretty high at the same time as the McGwire did. You can buy a PSA 10 for under $20 now.
