Unheralded wax

My list is below. Please post yours here as well.

Tons of low population PSA 10 cards in these. Most are lesser known products (which also meant lower production numbers), and you can often buy an entire box for what guys are paying for one pack from the late 1970s.

1981 and 1984 Fleer Star stickers. Solid colored borders, along with common centering and rough cut issues. Tons of HOFers to chase with populations under 5 in a PSA 10. The 1984 set has an extremely tough Strawberry rookie.

1989 Topps American/UK baseball. Solid blue borders, along with common centering and rough cut issues. Tons of HOFers and stars to chase with very low populations in a PSA 10.

1989 Topps BIG Baseball 3rd series. Centering is typically way off on the Randy Johnson and John Smoltz rookies. Populations in a PSA 10: Johnson-7, Smoltz-16

1992 Fleer Baseball Jumbo/Cello. Solid blue-border chipping, gold-foil imperfections, and poor centering are all common issues on the Rookie Sensation inserts. The Frank Thomas, Jeff Bagwell and Pudge Rodriguez all have a PSA 10 population of 3 or lower.

not really sure i agree on this. how many boxes of 1992 fleer will you have to open to finally hit a PSA 10 on one of those rookie sensations? and even then, assuming you get one, what would it really be worth?

i think if you're after those, you're better off trying to buy raw cards and submit them so you have some sense of what you've got.

while those other issues may be tough, i'm not sure they have enough of a following to matter. rare doesn't always mean expensive.
  • I have to agree. I've cracked at least 30 of those cello boxes, every one of which I paid no more than $10 for (that was my threshold)...it was still a losing proposition. I think I got a Thomas 9 that got half my money back. They're extremely tough

Don't get me started on busting 1989 Topps Hockey for PSA 10s....

I don't think these would be a losing proposition any more than a 1977 to 1980 wax pack at $25 to $50 for 1 pack....or a 1982 or 1983 Wax Box at $250. What are your odds of getting anywhere near your money back on that 1977 to 1983 wax? How many of those boxes I listed could you buy and rip for that $250? And you could still chase some pretty nice 10s.

I'd put 86 Topps baseball in this list. Many HOFers go for high dollars and it's still very cheap.
  • 1977-1980 unopened has value as is whereas 1992 fleer's only value is when opened
