PCGS submission form...I learned something recently.

I sent in two groups of four coins back in early November (four varieties and four crossovers), and the results were posted on the website late last week. Two crossed in the other TPG grades and two DNC. I thought that something must be wrong. I used to think that if the grade requested was blank, "Any" grade would be considered/given. Wrongo on my part, "If you leave this area blank, PCGS will assume the minimum grade is the grade currently on the holder". I don't remember putting anything in the that grade requested block before and I got really lucky in the past.

I need to give PCGS Customer Service a call first thing on Monday morning since it has not been identified as shipped and ask for forgiveness and to take another look at the remaining two coins.

Sometimes we learn the hard way.

Question: if a crossover is sent in and an "Any" grade is requested, what happens if it is deemed cleaned, damaged, etc... after removing from the original holder? Details grade?

On my recent cross submission, it was as clear as mud to me so I just wrote a minimum grade in there.

I was not sure if ANY was ANY NUMERICAL GRADE or ANY was ANY holder which included GENUINE etc.

The PCGS submission form has a column for "MIN GRADE CROSSOVER OR 1965 TO DATE" and this is where you place your minimum grade for crossovers. If I recall correctly, leaving this area blank means that you want to cross over at least at the currently certified grade. This is explained on the back of the form under Point 5. Also, if you write "ANY" you will only receive a straight numerical grade for the coin and it will not be placed into a genuine or details holder. This is also explained on the back of the form under Point 5.

TomB is correct. Looks like someone did not read the instructions clearly enough. image

If you are willing to accept any grade why not just crack them out and send them in raw?

Guilty. I got ahold of Customer Service this morning and they will resend the two with "Any" straight grade this time around, and send the two previously graded to the house.

It must be a "guy thing", not reading the instructions until something goes wrong. I represent that demographic well.

I have done this in the past and have been burned a few times. If the coins in their Old ANACS White holders were to be deemed as "problematic" in PCGS eyes, I would rather keep them in their original holders and sell 'em as-is...in a straight grade holder from ANACS.

I have had NGC coins that I have tried to cross to PCGS, PCGS did not like the toning and slapped the coin into a genuine holder. That was a terrible trade off and I won't make that mistake again. So, if I have a toned PR67 in an NGC slab with a QA or CAC sticker on it....but just want the coin in a PCGS numerically graded holder for Registry purposes, I will send for cross with PR63 as the minimum. The grade can always be corrected later.

Just think how mad you'd be if your NGC MS67 came back as PCGS AU58 because you left the column blank.

If you left the grade blank on the form, it would only cross if it deemed MS67 (grade on original holder) by PCGS...otherwise it would garner a DNC (did not cross) and left in its original holder.

"Any" grade does not include "genuine", which is not a grade.
