eBay denari - is it just me or...

Is it just me or do the majority of the currently listed raw Roman denarii look fake?
Maybe I'm gun-shy but to me over 90% look off.

Many of them do look too good to be true, but I have not heard of any large-scale problem.

What ship is that in your icon? Too small to make out, but it reminds me of the Olympia.

I would say that if you are leery of any one coin, just pass. If it is super rare, you should be leery at any price if you do not know the seller. If it just is common and kind of off, you will find a better example at a decent price.

There are several sellers that post here or others on eBay that folks here can recommend. If you see a coin you like in the inventories of those sorts of folks, you can rest assured you are getting a good coin.

I would agree that many coins are probably over cleaned on eBay rather than being fake when it comes to common stuff.

Here's one trick I use. If you're interested in a coin an ebay seller has to offer, look at their other listings. If they're mostly listing non-coin junk, or other fishy looking coins, just pass. If they appear to have a good selection of authentic coins, go for it.
