Check out this GEM of an Ebay seller!

So, I got a little lost in the endless ocean of Ebay listings last night, and I came across this seller who has a bunch of "old mason jars full of old coins" that he "bought from an estate" and is selling to lucky Ebay buyers as is, "he never even opened the jars".....

Here is a link to a couple of the old mason jars full of old coins...

Old mason jar full of valuable old coins, Ebay listing... SCAM

Here is another one:

listing 2 old mason jar, old coins, super value, "estate buy"

He has a couple more. My question is, why do buyers continue to fall for this type of scam, over and over again? The other question I have is, if you are this seller, why use the same ebay account to buy the old mason jars, old bills, and old junk coins that you use to sell the "estate bought old mason jars full of treasures"..... ??? I do not get it.

Thoughts? Am I being overly critical?

  • OH, I forgot to mention, you can check his feedback history and see that he bought the jars and everything he put inside them two weeks ago, all on ebay... He forgot to mention that part about the estate sell in his description.... lol

Yep, tough luck for the unwary buyer.

That is funny is a sad way...not only the jars but a lot of coins also it looks like. The nice thing is that many people who try these things are not the brightest bulbs in the shop. This looks to be the case here...and on the flip side it seems the buyers don't do a whole lot of checking feedback prior to shelling out some ducats on these.

Heck...maybe I can sell him some paper scraps that I have used an old fountain pen to write something like 'Grampys old timely coin collection from when he worked at the mint in SF from 1864 - 1932' so he can throw that in his jars from the estate! Might add a little more realism to have a story behind it.

There are a lot of "jars" listed on eBay. The gold coin is always on the outside, though he framed his nicely against the bill.

Very, very cool. Thanks for pointing that out. It is unusual to see such a blatant misrepresentation as this. Also, did you notice that the gold piece always ends up on the very outside of the jar, in front of the paper money? I just don't understand it at all and I really don't understand the positive feedback?

Since enough people fall for this as is, why go to the difficulty of two eBay accounts?

He bought the $20 note for $102.95. The 1899 Black Eagle note he bought for $119. The $2.5 Indian gold for $285 and the other $2.5 gold for $305.

There's a 100% chance he's a scammer. And looking at past auctions, he has other questionable "grab bag" type auctions that show some desirable coin with likely junk hidden within.

This is a common Ebay scam that fits within Ebay rules and enough idiots will bid up hoping to buy something awesome for cheap. The "grab bag" auctions are very common in the wheat cent rolls where they put a mercury dime, a jewelry piece $2.5 gold or some other attractive coin on the end and suggest that the whole roll might be such mysterious coins.

Note that that same seller was also selling original rolls of trade dollars or something like that that had to put together recently and not some find from long ago.

People new to the hobby fall for this sort of thing. I did back 7 or 8 years ago - I bought a roll with a 1921 mercury dime showing on one end, and then a roll with a reverse of a seated dime with a cc mint mark. The 21 merc was bent, and the cc seated dime was legit but very circulated, not worth anything. The rolls were filled with junk mercs and a couple junk barbers. Then I found the forums and educated myself and learned lessons. Didn't pay too much so a relatively cheap lesson. I do have a merc dime set in a Dansco and a silver Washington quarter set in a set of Whitman folders, all pulled out of junk silver bags, and there were some dimes in these rolls that started the merc set.

There is no such thing as "no returns" on eBay. Not sure why anyone focuses on that.
