Cards within packs stuck together

I recently purchased some mid-90's Pinnacle boxes from BBCE which upon opening a few packs, all the cards were stuck together and were all damaged as they pulled apart. I have three boxes left out of four and I assume the others will all be like this. Should I just chalk it up to a bad buy because I should have known that could be the case or ask about a return for the other three boxes? Not a big deal of money, but the boxes aren't worth much the way they were. I tried putting a few packs in the freezer and that helped a little bit, so maybe that is another way to go.

  • Can a little time in the freezer help with this?
  • I would shoot them an email. Minimally I would think they would want to know so they don't keep selling them or at least let the buyers know they could have issues upon opening.

I'd give BBCE a heads up as they may want to pull the product. Continue with the freezer and get what you can get. I wouldn't ask for a refund. Good luck!

I've had packs before like that (back when I DID buy packs...geez I must be the most boring collector ever but I guess I'd rather have the sure thing, complete sets) and as long as you carefully and gently pull them apart that should work, at least it did for me.

Still some of those packs do go back 15-20 years...

I've also found that after the freezer treatment, and pulling the cards from the pack, I gently "flex" the brick along each axis. If lucky you'll hear some crackling as some of them release. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses - it looks it is a trip to the freezer for these boxes to see if they loosen up.

Well a month or so back I got 2004-14 Topps baseball factory sets from BBCE and I think 2004 was a year they still did the UV coating on both sides, and I was able to separate them okay as long as I was careful and gentle. Though I think a year or two later Topps started only doing UV coating on the front and I think, maybe switched to the "old fashioned" gloss on both sides, like they had in their 1993 set.

Too bad BBCE didn't have a complete run of 2001 onward football factory sets at the time...

As for how anyone can tell this without opening the box? Well, I suppose just assume any set with UV glossy coating on both sides (most sets by 1994 did, some in 1992 and 1993 also) is going to have that issue to some extent. Just be careful out their folks.

I bought some during their sale a few years back, including 1998 Skybox Thunder Football. The price was good, but I found that the cards have stuck together. Some of these are nice to know because the cards from them will be a little harder to get as many of the cards are pretty much garbage within. I think in the Thunder boxes, only 2-3 cards per pack did not get stuck together and pull parts of the other cards on it.

I dont hold the sellers responsible as it is impossible to know the condition of the cards inside.

I put together several sets of 1991 Stadium Club baseball. I'll

have to dig them up to see their fate.
