Does this card warrant a 3? Does the indent on the left border knock it down that far?

Before I submitted it I checked Ebay to sort of set my expectations. Looking at these I have a hard time understanding my 3.

I would guess the card could go as high as a 5(ST) and this was submitted as a no qualifier. The surface indent on the front should knock it down to a 5 (similar to a wrinkle) and though light, I don't see how it wouldn't get a stain (ST) qualifier with the number of spots. Great looking card that presents much nicer than the technical grade.

Thanks for the response. When I first picked this card up that's what I thought too. What confuses me in this case is the POP report for the 1914 Cracker Jacks has relatively small percentage of grades with qualifiers given that virtually every example you'll find has staining to one degree or another. For example, take a look at this one...I find it hard to compare it to mine. And there are several other comparable examples out on Ebay currently.

Strictly reading the grading standards, VG 3 allows for slight staining and the rounded corners, EX 5 does not allow for any staining. Perhaps if it got in front of the right grader they would give a straight 5, knowing that slight staining is expected on these. Or getting it in a 5(ST) holder may help others familiar with the set look at it more favorably. Regardless, I would pay a good bit more for a 3 that looked like yours over one that looked like the other shown.

Thanks, I still believe they do give some leeway on the staining though. For instance take a look at this 4, it is at least as prevalent as mine and this is no better than a 5 without it..

If the grade doesn't fit, you must resubmit image
  • In this case, I'd think that you might want to consider the quality of the card in eye appeal and presentation rather than comparing it to cards with rounded corners and creases. There should be a premium applied to a nicer looking card and the current market typically bears that out. You are also comparing to examples which were graded at different times, so then you'd need to consider what standards were being used, since they do arguably change over the years.

Here is the sitch: Grader A gives it a 3. Grader B gives it a 5. Then a CU member tells you to resubmit. Seen it a million times. BTW, I just got my grades on seven 1971 Bazooka boxes. I got grader A.
