Collecting goals acheived or focuses modified as we close out the year?

First off, I think we can say that the post of the year has to be Josh's 55 topps pack! I still cannot believe what happened, but so happy for him and his success with his rip....

On another note, I was thinking of collecting goals at the beginning of the year and if they have been achieved or how things have refocused or stayed in focus, etc. How did you do with your collecting goals as started at the beginning of the year? Has your collecting focus been changed/refined this year? Anything that you're really proud of? Disappointments?

I've had one recurring goal each year and that is my 1956 topps set in PSA7. 2015 saw me acquire 36 cards for my set bringing my total to 106 out of 342 for 31% complete. It was probably my most aggressive year of acquisitions and I might be able to reach my 10 year goal if I continue to have productive years like this one. I'm currently in year 4 of working on the set. There's still a long way to go, but I'm still passionate.

On the unopened side of the spectrum, I've been working on a run of 1970's packs in PSA8 and cello packs in PSA9. Currently, I only have a few packs, but since the box prices are out of my range, I have enjoyed looking and searching for nice packs and cellos. This year, I also purchased an 80/81 topps basketball pack in PSA8 that I have enjoyed since the box price is just out of my range.

I'd be remiss to mention my black Friday/cyber Monday purchases that will meet their maker over the course of the winter months and the doldrums of tax season. hopefully, I can space the ripping out and not go crazy all at once....I'll let you know if there are any good pulls....some is junk, some is mid junk, and some nice packs.

Thanks for letting me share and I'd love to hear your thoughts on your year and how you did!

Very cool goals and great job...love your impressive pack run and what you accomplished for your 56 set is killer..have fun opening some of those packs...I think you should rip that 81 on the board and pull a Montana in front of us!!!!!!!

As for my goals for 2015, I've went way above what I thought I'd be able to do with my Basic Mantle run...I did well selling unopened which allowed me to get some great things done there. 2016 will be more of the same for me with Mantle, update coming soon, but I also want to tackle another player...just hard to move my focus away from upgrades in to my Mantle collection.

Its a small world..sold off all of my unopened (almost all 98%) and some sets and put it all into Mantles and some pretty nice HOF rooks including Jordans. Was a spur of the moment decision kind of.

great idea with you pack run...good luck....and also being able to not rip it all

My goal this year was to get to 4000 93 Finest Refractors. I am at 3985 with a month to go. Currently I own 8.3% of the production run. Of commons I own 14% of the production run. I like making shortprints, so far I have made 23 of them. The most I have of any one player is Randy Myers with 132 or 54% of the production run. I don’t seem to have an end goal. I just keep adding to the hoard. Bought two refractors today.

Phil, if you don't mind me asking, what do you have invested in your board of refractors and what do you estimate their current value at?
  • PhilGPhilG Posts: 237 ✭✭
I have 76 thousand invested. Current value based on eBay pricing is $92526.66. High Beckett is $169,220.00.(I wish) I have programs that track eBay pricing. I have data going back to 2004.

Incredible bro. I love the passion. I "hoard" Brian Downing game used bats, but I have around 30 so you win this one.

I forgot to mention. Of the 3985 refractors 3270 are raw and 715 are graded

When I got back into collecting I was told to buy rookies. Well I heard Barry Bonds was good so I started buying 1987 Topps. Paying two dollars each. I have 533 of them. All in top loaders. Then when 94 Pinnacle artist proofs came out with their print run of 1000 per. I started buying up those. Ended up with a 2273 of those. Next I got hooked on 93 Finest Refractors. Only 241 of each. Been buying them since 1999. I only buy commons. I can’t bring myself to buy a star when I can get ten commons for the same price. I do have the set. But only one. I track eBay. I have written programs that gather up completed sales data of the refractors and puts that data into a spreadsheet. My web site has a link to the spreadsheet. Commons have dropped in price. I am picking them up for $12 each. I’m 67 years old and a retired electronic engineer. I have no knowledge of baseball. I have the foggiest notion what the players in the set did for a living. I know the cards as numbers from 1 to 199. I am a hoarder.

This has been a slow year for me but I was able to add one new PSA 10 to my Wrestling All Stars sets. It is tough to advance the ball down the field there. I also submitted a 1986 Carnation Major League Wrestling Ric Flair that graded PSA 9 so that was a nice win too.

Phil that is a very interesting hoarding strategy. good luck with it, keep us updated. it will be very cool to see where it goes.

the thought that you can know the % of the production you have a certain set is very cool.

my goals have been narrowed this year, I'm within 3 cards of the 52 topps low number set and within 5 of the finishing the 55 topps set. and close to finishing several other sets.

I of course haven't sold enough to clear anything out, but I'm hopeful to do so this year... the national is on the east coast so I am hoping to scrape up some cash and go on a buying spree. of course good deals or cards I need keep coming up so there goes the money I have saved up. just spent about $300 on 55's I needed... but I needed them.

always interested to see how people's collecting goals have turned out

Cool stuff guys....seems like some of you have been doing a lot of work and getting projects near completion.

Phil, really cool about your refractor collections and basically how youre trying to monopolize all the cards!! :-)

I completed my Willie Stargell basic set. I have his rookie in PSA 7, but I don't really like it. At some point I will get a better 7 or upgrade to a PSA 8.

My favorite Stargell card is the 67, just a great photo from a great set.

No doubt Josh's rip should be post of the year.

As far as collecting goals I modified the criteria in my '89 Topps Hockey set to include purchased PSA 10s...but still plan to rip and sub each card in a 10.

I've put a hold on the Superman 1940 set I started for/with my son. Sold most of what I picked-up in this set but held onto the big cards. Will start it back up when he is older (if he wants).

Been working on a Pulitzer Prize for Novel autograph set that I would like to eventually have made into custom cut cards featuring the original book cover artwork. Here is an example:

    for 2016 -

Inspired by Casey's (Charrigan) HOF hockey cards, I really want to start some kind of hockey auto project. Been bouncing several ideas in my head but haven't decided on what direction to go on this.

Would like to start a player set....but don't know who.

Will buy a PSA membership and begin subbing 1989s monthly regardless of how bad the specials are. One of the reasons my 1989 set has been moving so slowly is because I haven't been sending cards in like I should.

  • Mullins..That is an awesome project. Keep us posted. Better yet, that would deserve its own thread. Think about it. Thanks
