I believe the Robinson was in series 2.

Series 1 - Him holding his jersey

Series 2 - Him in action shot in jersey

Series 1 goes for more in PSA 10 form it appears on eBay.

Series 1 definitely the most desirable.

The series 1 David Robinson (the one where he is holding the jersey #138) is certainly more valuable than the one where he is shooting a free throw #310. PSA 10 of #138 >$100, PSA 10 of #310 around $15.

I believe Hoops followed a packing sequence whereby you could reasonably determine if a Robinson was in a pack. Does anyone know this to be fact? I opened a decent amount of Series 2 and seem to recall the same cards appearing before hitting the Robinson.

Yes I would love to know that also. Is there a card on top that
Can be seen through pack that indicates a Robinson?

Yes, there was a sequence. It has been so long, I can't remember it. I do remember that card being red hot in 89 though I think around $60.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Yes, there is a definite sequence that is very consistent for both series. The top card is always easily visible, so be careful buying loose boxes. The only card not part of the sequence is the Detroit Pistons Championship SP in series two...it is inserted at random. Sealed cases are the only truly safe play.

Man - I have an open case of series 1 I bought from BBCE years ago (I foolishly opened the case - bought two of them and have a case worth of boxes left). This gives me the hankering to open some up!
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.

How many robinsons per box is normal?
  • milbrocomilbroco Posts: 2,742 ✭✭✭✭
I remember getting 5 or 6 in one box back in 1989 and then 2 in another. So I would guess anywhere between 2 and 6.

Typically I think it would be 2 or 3 would be normal.

The average is just under two a box, but the collation was all over and so it can be zero to five per box. I have recently ripped a bunch of these just for fun...it is a great nostalgic break.

I was the first on my side of town to pull the Pistons Team card. I remember the dealer instantly offered me $20 and I said no. In the long run a bad move on my part. Haha.

Outside of the Detroit area, what was so special about the Pistons team card?

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

It was some short print card that was inserted into I believe Series II packs.

It was thought to be very rare and the set was super hot at the time so the price reflected it. I would bet it can be had for a buck or less on EBAY.

The first year Hoops were not sealed boxes to my recollection. These were

easy to search. I would by only buy FASC boxes from BBCE.

Not saying I am an expert, but did quite a bit of purchasing of these cards. On one night shortly after the release of Series II, we hit every Kroger in the Knoxville are (12 at the time) and bought every single pack with the Robinson in it. It isnt that hard to figure out and honestly, the cards arent worth a whole lot to make it worth while now, but back then, the packs were 35-40 cents and we could sell the Robinsons for about $4 to dealers. Not sure of the exact sequence, but know I had a buttload of Kevin Johnson Rookies and Mitch Richmond rookies, so they might be part of the sequence. Not sure about the order for series I
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I can confirm neither of those rookies are in the Robinson sequence for either series.
