1987 Fleer basketball

Just sent in around 25 perfectly centered 1987 fleer basketball cards and basically received all 8's. These cards were all really nice ones. I see many way off centered 9's, like 67-33 in some cases and all of these had to be 55-45 or better most 52-48 in all directions. I must be missing something on how they grade the cards.

Is it better to send in off-centered ones? What exactly hurts these cards? The backs were all flawless also. Keep in mind I grade a decent amount of cards per year, not a novice at this.

On the 1988 fleer basketball I got quite a few 10's. Stockton, 2 Jordan's and Price. Got several 9's on pippen's and rodman's. So i guess I can see good on those, but my sight must be really bad on the 1987's.

Anyone with experience grading these cards let me know what you have found out.

I just sent a really nice 1987 fleer basketball Jordan and I'm thinking it has a good shot at psa 9. Still waiting on the order to pop, so I'll let you know when it does. Other than that, I have no experience grading1987 Fleet basketball cards.

Ink spots on the dark background behind the player plagues this issue. hold the card in bright sunlight and you'll see them. It usually keeps it from a gem mint holder, but with all else nice (corners, centering, etc) you can get 9's.

I know Drexler is a tough card and I sent in 1 with 53/47 centering, the other 57/43 centering and got 8's on both. In fact I did not get one 8.5 all 8's.

I've graded a bunch of 1986's and feel pretty confident on that issue. I've never subbed an 87 or 88 but I think it might be fun to try and sub some 87 or 88 Jordans and some of the big 88 RCs to try for some 9's and 10's. One thing I have noticed is that the white on the 87 fleer card sometimes turns a little off white or yellow. Perhaps they considered this a surface issue and knocked you for it? Otherwise I don't know. Congrats on the gem 88's. Those are some nice hits. If you don't mind sharing, where did you pick up the cards (show, LCS. eBay, other)?

Just sent a Barkley and Bird and thought they were easy 9s, both came back 8s

I know Bird is tough to get in a high grade from this set for some reason.

Picked them up on EBAY. Either individually or through sets. None at shows. I also got a few jordan 1988 9's, which are decent.

I've had some oddities with 87s too. I've had one Jordan (that I bought as "mint" in 92 from a white plains show) first come back as a 6, then a 7, then a 8. Think it could be an 8.5 but not cracking out again

Also have had a few 8s in bird, Barkley, and Akeem too

Odd that they seem tough since it's a pretty straight forward design with clear right angle borders and white corners

Agreed. I fell victim to this a few years ago...before .5 grades.

    Thanks,
