My quest to collect the "Top 50" 1971 Topps PSA 7 HOFers

Well, folks, although there's still some other things I want to also do regarding my collection (especially my mid 90s insert set quest) I feel I'm just about all set regarding 1973-79 Topps PSA 7's (some 8's in 1978-79) so I think I can now turn my attention to my dream set, 1971 Topps. image My wife too also likes the black border design incidentally. Although the "Big Six" (Munson, Clemente, Ryan, Rose, Mays, Blyleven) and to a lesser extent the "Next Six" (B. Robinson, Baylor/Baker, Bench, Reggie, Aaron, Banks) can give quite the sticker shock, I crunched the numbers regarding the SMRs (again my bad for stupidly getting those and VCP's mixed up) and you know what? I think the other 38 HOFers (yes I made a nice even "Top 50" list plus the seven checklists) and the seven checklsts (at least with time) are quite doable, especially if I can find some good deals where I can get several of them in one purchase.

Now, I don't know how long it'll take for me to complete this, but I think now is the time to finally for it! Wish me luck! image

Would love to see the Yaz when you pick it up. I have a 6 and I'm hoping to upgrade to a 7.5 or 8.

The first time I tried this I started with Yaz because that's my Bostonian wife's hero image Maybe I should do that this time as well?

Well folks with the help of a special sale, I was able to cross off 11 out of the top 50 (Neikro, Catfish, McCovey, Carlton, Mazeroski, Simmons, Perry, Carew, Wilhelm, Billy Williams, Sutton) and three of the seven checklists (coins, 2nd, 3rd). I think I'm off to a pretty good start don't you?

Thanks Joe, I feel quite fortunate that I'm even now able to go for these. Obviously I had to have my 1973-79 ones all done first before doing so would've made sense (still missing 1973 Schmidt but no hurry on that one).

Nice idea! Since you have a few non-HOFers in there, another to consider is Rich Allen. A tough high number to get in nice condition.

We'll see image I do also automatically include card #1 on my graded list because we all know how kids who kept their cards in a rubber banded stack in numerical order, well... Plus Topps usually makes card #1 special in someway.

That card #1 (O's Team) is a bear to get in nice shape. A PSA 8 just sold for $449 on eBay.

All the more reason I'm doing 7's. Surely getting it in 7 shouldn't be too tough/expensive, I hope...
