Any 1989 Fleer BB Rack Pack Experts out there?

Is there anyway to tell by codes on the rack case if you will have a better chance to get a Ripken error or Randy Johnson Marlboro back. I know some of you guys have opened a ton of it. It seems like it is starting to dry up.

Great question. I have inquired about this in the past and gotten a variety of answers.

I have an unopened case here that is either "Error" or "secondary error," and a story about a large ebay seller who stole money and another unopened case from me and then went dark and ignored my inquiries.

Looking forward to any info people have on the codes...

There's a 5 digit code on all the cases that's stamped on (not the box graphics). The lower the number the better. I can tell you that if it starts with an 8 you'll at least get the FF card. I got a rack case last year that started with a 9 that had the FF card and the final correction of the Johnson card. It was totally by luck because the picture on the listing was a stock photo. Most of the listings you see on eBay don't show a photo of the 5 digit number. Occasionally, you'll have a listing gleefully pointing out the 5 digit number and touting it as an error case.

PS - This thread came up a while back and I incorrectly stated that there was nothing on the case that would indicate what cards were inside. Luckily, I had saved the box for some reason and noticed it a few months later.

I am not sure about any codes on rack packs or if any Ripken FF are found in rack packs.

I am not sure how free someone would be with that info though.

I bought 6 boxes from tsalems1 in 2013 which have the errors in them.

I opened one box and found a PSA 10 ripken and a PSA 9 Johnson Ad partially obscured.

I still have the 5 boxes.

Not even close to true. I am looking at a case I just busted that the stamp starts with 8 and I couldn't even get a Mike Heath error.

No there is no way to tell without opening them. I usually look for a pack with correct sequencing. If it is a corrected regular square (not rounded) black box variation, I just chunk the rest of the case.

  • BTW, there are a few unrecognized variations of the Ripken other than the one I mentioned in previous response. Most common is the jagged white line on top left as opposed to solid white line. Still not sure why that one is not recognized by PSA or Beckett.
