Just increased my tuition costs. Thought I would pass on the lesson.
I won a lot on icollector.com. The auction firm is Auction Network out of Markham, Ontario. Their terms state that all shipping will handled by a 3rd party outfit named Pak Mail. No reference costs are stated just a phone #.
Won a single lot for $30 CAD + 18% juice. It's a RCM issued piece with original RCM clamshell packaging. (Max weight 3 or 4 ounces, postage estimate $12 CAD.) Got notified that shipping fee is $30 CAD minimum. (It must be coming gift wrapped!)
Lesson: DO NOT bid in an auction that does not specifically list all of the fees. If not listed, make the call to find out.

it looks like they have learned from the British!
many British auction houses use 3rd party shipping. They charge big time.
I inquired after I won the item and was told: we have to send a driver to fetch your goods and then do the paper work....
The subject item was a New Brunswick 10 cent coin, about VG 10, 1862.
will never do business with this auctioneer again.
It is nothing but making "sure" their friends are cashing in on a unsuspecting and assuming overseas buyer.
When I spoke with the auctioneer it got really down to the nitty gritty.
I asked him to just drop the dime into an envelope and send it as regular mail...... Oh... a big mistake.... suddenly mail security and VAT came into play...
the New Brunswick dime was sold for GBP 25...
I suggested I pay the VAT and done with it.....
"oh, we can not do that" as we can not do the paper work. ( no Paper work needed when VAT is paid)
I suggested to him that that is a Royal farth he is dishing up.
so, I ended up paying the 3rd party charges...., 22 GBP.
the Dime to be a (1862) 2/2 and graded as a VF 20, and that made it really worth my while.
BUT, never again without checking first.
