And certainly not a "Holy Grail" of samples when there isn't even a coin in the holder. And no one here can honestly believe this was a real sample given out by PCGS. Sure it's cool and I can see how the very hardcore slab collectors would want it for their collection, but many true sample collectors would not even be interested in this piece of plastic.

True - and many true sample collectors are VERY interested. image

That's cool enough that I want one. And I don't even collect sample slabs.

I'm interested in hearing why you say this. No one I've shown these to has doubted the legitimacy as an authentic pcgs sample.

And as to holy grail status, all but one person that I've shown these to has expressed a deep interest in them, and none of them have been sample collectors.

I'm not suggesting that the piece is not cool. I'm sure most collectors would like that up to a certain price of course. I would have course hit buy it now on those if I saw them too image

But I sell quite a few samples and there are indeed many sample collectors that will collect anything w/ a PCGS or NGC label... samples that were given out at shows, promotional slabs given out by third parties (companies, clubs, individuals), luncheon slabs, treasure trivia slabs and just about everything else.

But there are some samples collectors that I deal with that seem to have interest only in what I call "true" sample slabs... slabs that were really given out for free by the grading companies. There are lots of coins out there w/ sample on the label that most collectors would agree were certainly never really given out for free to the public as samples. I've had some "sample" slabs made myself and so have many others.

Not saying either is the right way to collect; collectors should always collect what they like.

Just pointing out that in calling this example the "Holy Grail" of samples, you'd run into some sample collectors who would take the position that the piece really isn't a sample at all.

But I would be very surprised if these 1933 $20 samples were really given out to the public by PCGS as a sample. Mostly likely they were not.

Maybe we need a new category?

    Fantasy slab?

Here is another example of a fantasy slab:

Furthermore sample slab collectors can be less competitive against each other OR twice as competitive because the sample slabs are generally pretty inexpensive. But it is generally all in good fun.

I personally think it is a great way to introduce the young kids to the concept of axquiring slabs while they are still collecting raw coins for their albums. It might help re-stimulate getting young kids interested in the coin hobby. It certainly cannot hurt?

I would actually disagree with the part about young kids and getting them into sample slabs. Only if they get them free at coins shows, etc, but I would never want my son to work to purchase-collect them.

The reason is that I don't want him to focus on only slabbed coin.s

Yes, nice raw coins are getting fewer and fewer, but we have all seen slabbed coins that we disagree with. My son has slabbed, raw, raw-album, and raw-2x2 coins. Since he has been collecting, I have tried to work with him and the progression has been raw, out of circulation, coins to raw coins in 2x2s and albums, to slabbed coins. It is a mix and I believe that is healthy. He also has a couple of sample slabs. Cool as something to see/talk about, but, for a YN, I, personally, wouldn't focus on it.

For an adult? Anything goes that floats the boat.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
