Newp from Atlas

I recently added this little gem to my small collection of coins designed by George Kruger Gray. In my opinion, he was and is one of the best coin designers of all time. The number of coins he designed is astounding, for both Great Britain proper and many of the Dominions.

Yes, very nice. I always liked the oak-and-acorn motif on these.

I too have a proof George V sixpence from Atlas in my crosshairs... but it's a 1911. Bet you know the one, if you bought this from their site. I haven't made the final decision yet, or gotten my funds in position, but I'm quite seriously considering it.

Very lovely coin there - I have always liked the simple designs such as the 3 and 6d of this vintage and the later farthings of George 6. May post one of the later as a special treat later on....

More nice 20th C. silver PLEASE!

While I have y'all here, on a similar topic (if brg5658 will excuse the intrusion) what's your opinion of this coin?

It is PCGS PR66. I think it is stunning, but is it worth going north of $300 for? (Atlas has it for $395 on their site but offered me a lower price.)

Lord that is a nice looking coin

IMO, that is about 40% high on the last pictured coin. 250-275 would be about right. Beautiful coin, but fairly typical of undipped specimens - these really are SO nice....

7jags- thanks for that assessment. Seems to be borne out by some of the past auction prices I accessed from the PCGS cert page, too, though I didn't see pictures of those other coins so who knows what kind of eye appeal and/or toning they had. Interestingly, if I remember correctly, the highest auction price (somewhere in the $300s) for this date and type was for a PR65, while the one posted above is a PR66. That PR65 coin must have been pretty special.

I think this one is, too, though whether it is special enough to warrant the $340 price Atlas counteroffered me I don't know. Nor do I know if it would be prudent to push them any farther, at risk of seeming like a jerk. I've done one transaction with them so far and it went very well. I love their inventory and images and so want to develop a good relationship with them, though on my budget I'll never be one of their heavyweight customers.

LordM: I think that sixpence is a lovely coin....BUT...

I will get up on my soapbox a bit. I really dislike the way that colorful proofs are photographed by PCGS. You never know how the coin is really going to look outside of that "sweet spot" 2-3 degree angle of perfect light reflection off of the toning. You simply cannot tell anything about the surface conditions when a coin is photographed like that. For example, when I saw that coin originally on the Atlas site, it appeared to me that there is a spot along the rim on the obverse between DEI and GRA. Of course, if the photo were taken in a normal way I'd be able to see that for sure -- but I can't see anything from this glamour shot.

All that being said: Atlas has a very good return policy of 14 days, no questions asked. I have only purchased a couple low-value coins from them, but they have been stellar pieces in hand.

I will follow-up by saying: I'm 99% sure I'd be happy with the proof sixpence that LordM posted. And, I'd happily pay $340 for it. I simply dislike PCGS TrueView images like this because they hide too much.

I know the "TrueViews" seem to be some sort of religious experience for some collectors, but I think they are actually a disservice on some coins -- particularly toned proofs.

    Just my opinions.

Brg- climb as high on your soapbox as you please. This is, after all, YOUR thread I butted in on, so thanks for indulging me with your opinion on this. Thanks to the others, too.

Me, I like the glamor shots, but yes, you do make a valid point to be borne in mind, particularly with colorful proofs, like you said.

In my collection I will usually display the TrueView of the coin but also a no-frills photo- often just a scan- of the slab. This way when I sell the coin I have a full slab image, which PCGS does not provide, and another alternate view of the coin.

It's funny- my basic, no-frills scan of the gilt proof George III halfpenny in my collection actually shows the DCAM contrast better than the TrueViews! (Yes, TrueViews plural. Phil gave me two.)

Tony Clayton has Unc at 90 pounds - he's not referring to an MS60 either. Still, double that for extra special gives 180 or about 275 USD like I said. Not horribly overpriced at 340.
