Carbon Spots and PCGS Grading

When PCGS grades a proof coin, do they take off points for carbon spots?? I have seen some 69s with spots and have some proof cents I have not sent in because they have a spot on them. Any ideas how PCGS grades these???

Thanks
Marty
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I have no idea. I too have seen one or two PR 69s with a small spot. I wasn't sure they should be 69s but they seemed otherwise perfect to me.

I've seen 69s that have small water residue spots, but no carbon spots.

In my experience, PCGS is very critical of and does not like carbon spots. They tend to weigh down grades where a coin will not get the benefit of the doubt if carbon spots exist. I have noticed this in Proof and MS Liberty Nickels and classic untoned proofs. With modern coins, I have no experience.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
