1824..a sleeper year for bust halves

Considered a later year half, and not prized as much as those from the teens and earlier, the 1824 is one of the more fun years in the capped bust half series.

Three overdates were significant...the over/1, over/4 and over/various. Scholars say the over/4 was not a really overdate (instead, a RPD or re-engraved 4). The over/various, or 1824/2/0, is one of the more bizarre overdates. The working die was overstruck multiple times and maintenance to remove traces of the wrong numerals seems to have been slipshod.

Here are a few AU examples. Two non-overdates, and the 1, 4, and various.

Lance.
