Stone's Duke Snider Basic Set

Duke Snider Basic Set

Hi everyone

I wanted to share my progress as I do the first "player" basic set I've ever considered doing.

I picked up his RC - I think it has all the charm of a PSA 5 but there's a slight erasure mark on the back - thus the lower grade.

I won't be doing this as a registry set - as such - but will be following the checklist to complete.

Duke Snider is a childhood favorite of mine - I was a Brooklyn fan as a child.

So, here we go:

I'm sure glad I get to share the journey with you all here - when I told Mary I was doing "the Duke" - she thought I was talking about the song!

I told her he's the Duke of Flatbush, not Earl. image

Great card, Mike! Are you going to do a mix of raw and graded?

Good luck on the set, and keep us posted as you add to it.

    MIKE...LOVE IT!

The third and oft forgotten of the 50's big 3 NY outfielders...but the guy who played for MY team.

I've got a 52 and 53 Bowman at PSA now. Due to hopefully pop tomorrow. Those will complete my Snider Bowman run. I don't think I'll do Topps as I have some other big Topps Player Collections going, but maybe someday.

Best of luck and a great start.

Awesome Bowman...thanks for sharing....any reason you won't be doing it as a registry set? because i was thinking of doing a diff player
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

Thanx! Answer is yes - I have some dealers that I've dealt with long enough to accept a raw card.

I may be removing any card that's holdered so I can put them in a nice small binder for viewing.

Since the set is small, I may just go in another direction and make a binder with holders.

    Just not sure.

    Thanx!

My first instinct was to do the set and put it in a nice binder. Thus, I picked up the SGC card from a friend/dealer.

There's really no reason to do a registry on this set as of now.

    I may change my mind?

    Thanx Jim.

If you remember, I started a thread on Snider. As a move along, I may add those items to this thread to "complement" my journey.

I'm looking forward to you posting the cards that are due to pop!

That is a great card. I really like the simple presentation of the '49 Bowman set in general. My father-in-law still swears that "The Duke" was the best CF in New York at that time. Best of luck with your journey. I look forward to seeing your other scans.

Mike, seeing this thread made my night! You've talked about starting a Snider set for a long time and I've been looking forward to it. On top of that, what a start! That RC has TONS of eye appeal!! Keep 'Em coming....

I love it when others post their player sets. Knocking off the rookie is a great start (wish I would have done that with my Willie Mays collection) to the set. Good luck with it and certainly keep us updated with the progress. Which card is next? Are you planning on doing it in order from rookie then 2nd year card etc...?

Thanx and good question. I'll be on the lookout for card #2 in January. Not in any hurry.

    Thanx Dan and Dave also!

I love Snider too. Great player and a classic ballplayer name. I like the idea of raw cards in a nice binder for viewing, especially since you can get lower graded cards that look almost perfect when cracked out.

That is a fantastic card and I can't wait to see what the additions will look like. Snider is one of the underrated and overlooked greats in the history of the game. Along with Ralph Kiner his career and cards are very under appreciated in my opinion.

Hi Mike. Sorry I am late to the party, but this will be a fun ride to watch. You are off to a great start with the RC. I can't wait to see your future additions.

Very nice snider. I love the idea of displaying the collection in a binder. Good luck to you
