    d. Babe Ruth (I think he's the only smart purchase on the list for that money).

Get out the toilet paper! Vizquel it is.

Why him? I dunno. Maybe someone else knows. He has 7 cards that sold for $2,000+ in recent months.

Looks like I got a pair of Depends for the evening. Damn! I figured Rocker and Vizquel were red herrings.

ETA: Which Vizquel cards are commanding that kinda coin?

    More than that even.

He has 8 that have closed at $2000+, 2 more that closed at $1999, 2 more than had BINs over $2000 but took best offers for less than $2000, and a bunch more in the $1500-$1800.

    What the heck?!?!

    Omar

  • The only logic answer is that Omar Vizquel is buying these himself in hopes that by 2018, he's become so popular that the committee HAS to induct him into the Hall of Fame.

    It's the only logic answer!

Lots of modern 1/1 and similar type stuff on the Vizquel sales list, but the ones that jump out at me are $1,000 for a 1992 Topps blank back and $900 for a 1993 Topps blank back. ?????

The same seller also sold a 1988 OPC Andres Galarraga blank back for $900 this week too.

How many bids are these auctions getting? I wouldn't be surprised if this seller is having a friend win the auctions for him in hopes to get some suckers to bite.

There are two guys that battle for every low numbered Omar. Get a 1/1 and the sky's the limit.

KMNorton nailed it. He finally signed an auto deal with Topps in 2013 or 2014 and I remember the first premium released he appeared in (Dynasty, Five Star, or the like) received outrageous hammer prices the opening month. There are a handful of deep pocket Omar collectors who will seriously turn a $50 card into a $1500 card in a heartbeat just to have it.

The economy must be doing pretty well, after all..

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
  • Even the first of a low-numbered card goes for a lot then it goes a great deal less for the next one

I get over 1100 results on a '2015 babe ruth' search and all on the first page at least were cards.

They don't seem to be registry guys either. The Vizquel master set registry only has 4 participants and the basic one has 5. In no case on either list is anyone making a serious effort to get close to completing it either. My initial expectation would have been that the cards serial numbered x/4 & x/5 would have sold for more than those that are 1/1 or x/2 since the 1/1 and x/2 don't qualify for addition to the master set registry (I can't remember if x/3 is eligible or not and PSA seems to have temporarily removed the explanation from the rules page for some reason). However, it does not seem to be the case for Vizquel. Also, most of the cards selling for high prices would only qualify for a yet unstarted Super Set since they are too recent to be on the Master set. Lastly, being eligible for grading does not seem to be a factor for the Vizquel cards. The ones selling high are for the most part not graded, and some would not be slabbed by PSA, like the blank back ones for example.

No bids at all. They were each sold using buy it now or best offer.
