1978 Baseball Factory Sealed Rack Case at Huggins

I'm sure the people more well versed in unopened can give opinions but I can't remember the last time I saw a sealed 1978 rack case for sale. I would think if legit would sell in the $12K range? No it's not my case. Thoughts?

  • There was one on eBay a couple months ago for, I believe, 18k . That being said I think a realistic selling point would be in the 14-15k range

Steve just had one during the last group rip at about 11K, iirc, which is current retail value, imo.

Agreed, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a couple of guys run it up over $12k. I remember when a certain board member purchased a case of those at the National in 2013. Bet he is happy with his purchase. image

Hi Mike!! Yes I am thank you!! Steve's buy price on this case was $10K. He now asks to "call" on the case. Probably a little cheaper than the $10K. Due to the "glut" of '78 racks that have been floating around prices have dropped. Still I agree with Mike that it's a good buy at $12K. May be a while before more cases crop up
  • The "glut" of '78 racks that have been floating around are mostly of the "Frankenstein" variety. I agree that they're having a negative (or positive if you're a buyer) affect on the prices of '78 racks.

Buyers who know the difference between those homegrown racks and a factory sealed case will continue to bid strong on the Huggins case IMO. It's already at $11,000. My guess is it settles somewhere in the $15K-$18K range.

What do legit individual 78 racks go for these days? I wouldn't mind finding a random one to set aside to one day open with my son. He is about to be 2 and so far I have set aside a run of Topps Football cello and wax packs from 80 up until a wax box for 89 and a cello box for I think 88. I have thrown aside a nice mix of random 80s Topps Baseball wax and cellos but nothing from the 70s yet for him. I figured once he starts to get old enough to appreciate sports cards it will be pretty fun to reward him here and there with vintage packs to really peak his interests in cards.
  • BBCE is currently asking $150 for them. BBCE wrapped ones on eBay have gone for around $125. None BBCE wrapped ones one eBay have gone for around $100.

If you're patient, I'd wake for another case break to snag one FASC (From A Sealed Case). That's the only way to know the rack hasn't been thumbed through.

There's not $11K worth of cards in that case, is there? Not sure how you could make your money back off that -- if you open it.
    Enjoy your collection!

A large part of the premium is tied to the sealed case itself. Once opened, the sum of its parts is worth far less than the value of the whole.

  • A 1978 Eddie Murray RC recently sold for over $10K. There are others from that year that have fetched similar and ever higher premiums. I think some people like the gamble as much as the seal.

Where are all the 1978 and 1979 Topps baseball racks coming from? It seems like the supply is increasing or is it the demand has dropped. When I see a good deal I am buying at prices lower than last year.

Wow, that is quite the premium for a sealed case. Correct me if I am wrong but I think loose racks are going for a little more than $100 on ebay.

There is always going to be a significant premium for a factory sealed case vs loose racks, many of which have been passed around over the years. In addition to getting pristine, guaranteed unsearched racks, the case itself is a much scarcer item than 72 loose racks. 11K plus juice is a good buyer"s price, imo.
