PCGS No Grade Code 80

ms70ms70 Posts: 13,957 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was researching a PCGS coin that has "GENUINE" where the grade goes which I have seen before, BUT it has GN where the code for the reason would normally go. When I check the cert it comes up as "80 - Genuine". It's also a solid blue label without an edge view gasket.

80 is not listed on the grading standards web page. Anyone know what 80 stands for?

This has come up before. I'm sure it's in the archives. I think it was a generic code for a BB.

Yes, I finally found it. The search produced a lot of unrelated results but ultimately that's what it was, a generic code for BB. I'm assuming it's no longer used.

PCGS's first venture encapsulating problem coins was a specific service, "Genuine Only", and cost $100 minimum per coin. No problem was mentioned on the label, and the cert number would start with the PCGS coin number (as it always does), followed by GN. (1234.GN for example). This service was short lived and was soon taken over by encapsulating all problem coins instead of bagging them.
