Most important addition to the Cherrypicker's Guide for Flying Eagle cents

EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
The new Chrrypicker's guide now includes two design pairings that have gotten left out of the "variety" hunters lists, mainly because they are not die varieties.

Most all 1858 Large Letters are paired with the High Leaves reverse, such as this example:

image

Notice the leaves at the C & T. They are higher than the base of the letters. This is the type used from 1857 into 1858.

Mid-year the mint redesigned both the obverse (Small Letters) and the reverse (Low Leaves) to give them a lower relief. This is the type of 1858. This would allow them to lighten the striking pressure and strike more coins with better detail. This is the Small Letter pair with the new Low Leaves reverse:

There are a few scare die pairings where the designs are interchanged - 1858 LL (Low Leaves) and the 1858 SL (High Leaves).

The 1858 LL (LL) is scarce - about 1 in 10 seen. The 1858 SL (HL) is very scarce, about 1 in 50 seen.

Since they are not die varieties, they were left out of the earlier die variety lists. They are better than varieties, they are design changes. So now, Cherrypicker's Guide lists them and soon (maybe now already) you will be able to get the 1858 LL (LL) and the 1858 SL (HL) listed on your PCGS slab. The commonly seen pairings - 1858 LL (HL) and 1858 SL (LL) are considered the non-variety listings.

Here is a list of 1858 Flying Eagle varieties.

ty for the update but it/they are taking precious placement of much more important coins.

how can something that can be had by the bucket full be in a "pickers" guide?

i truly need held by the hand and walked through this one.

ive seen oodles of both. perhaps scarce in au and above?

as a type, with 2 various coins like these, usually one is common and one is scarce.

unless there is a 3rd mid-high leaves im unaware of. or an ultra-high/low.

not attacking but calling this important is questionable.

not to disrespect design changes as i'm usually a fan.

most ive seen were raw so perhaps gradable examples may be scarce because these suckers corrode like crazy and a good portion are cleaned.

    .

so if you had to pick one of the 2 to call the standard design, which one would it be?

The 1858 LL (HL) is the type carried over from 1857. The new designs are the Small Letters obverse and Low Leaves reverse

Just searching Ebay now and I'm finding quite a few of all types.

Maybe I should buy some of the 'rare' type but for now I'm passing on these.

The important thing is that can now be labeled on the PCGS holder.

Normally something in the CPG carries a nice premium over the "normal" but I think what people are saying here is that this does not seem any more rare or significant unless you happen to own high grade examples, want them included in the registry for your own set or want to sell them for a significant premium etc. There are plenty of significant varieties left out of the CPG and I am not yet convinced that these are significant, special, noteworthy, more rare or more valuable etc. It is a possibility that I just need a better education on the variety? PCGS does not include every CPG variety in the registry sets so it will be interesting to see what happens here.

    .

with your extensive and intimate knowledge of the series, it'd be fun to know what you think should be included. i sure have a mini-list. image
