How long for war nickels to tone?

I have a set of war nickels in one of those capital holders (with a cardboard insert). Coins must have been sitting in that holder 15 years if not more. Looking at them there is a little bit of colorful toning if you look with a glass and squint, but mostly they just look like, well, a bunch of XF/AU nickels that have a little natural skin on them.
I put them back away, in the box where they've been sitting just about forever, wondering why I'm not manufacturing cool rainbows. Is there a "better" cardboard that has cooler chemicals in it?

Taco Bell.....
If you want to AT your coins just put them in old sulfur envelopes.
It can take just a few months to a year depending on all of the variables.
Looking for Top Pop Mercury Dime Varieties & High Grade Mercury Dime Toners.
And I could reopen the AT vs. NT debate - if it sits in a sulfur/paper album and tones then it's beautiful album toning, but if I put it in paper for the purpose of getting it to tone, it's AT
In this particular case, the coins are extremely cheap, the toning is for my enjoyment only. I'll move to warm/humid, give it a few years, and see where we are. Thanks

Ah, the warm and humid. I have all my coins in a cool/dry location. I should try that.

Nothing to open if you do as stated you are correct. NT is just that NT no human desire to affect the surfaces of the coin. The think about ATing coins over a slow long amount of time is that they look better. If you want instant crazy cool colors I can tell you how but they will be AT.

I'd say he's being fairly patient. Besides its not like he's pouring chemicals or throwing them in the oven. Sheesh
