How long for war nickels to tone?

I have a set of war nickels in one of those capital holders (with a cardboard insert). Coins must have been sitting in that holder 15 years if not more. Looking at them there is a little bit of colorful toning if you look with a glass and squint, but mostly they just look like, well, a bunch of XF/AU nickels that have a little natural skin on them.

I put them back away, in the box where they've been sitting just about forever, wondering why I'm not manufacturing cool rainbows. Is there a "better" cardboard that has cooler chemicals in it?

  • If you want to AT your coins just put them in old sulfur envelopes.

Then put that in a warm and humid environment. image

It can take just a few months to a year depending on all of the variables.

Ah, the warm and humid. I have all my coins in a cool/dry location. I should try that.

And I could reopen the AT vs. NT debate - if it sits in a sulfur/paper album and tones then it's beautiful album toning, but if I put it in paper for the purpose of getting it to tone, it's AT image.

In this particular case, the coins are extremely cheap, the toning is for my enjoyment only. I'll move to warm/humid, give it a few years, and see where we are. Thanks image

Nothing to open if you do as stated you are correct. NT is just that NT no human desire to affect the surfaces of the coin. The think about ATing coins over a slow long amount of time is that they look better. If you want instant crazy cool colors I can tell you how but they will be AT.

I'd say he's being fairly patient. Besides its not like he's pouring chemicals or throwing them in the oven. Sheesh

If placed in a sandwich baggie with a mashed-up hard boiled egg, you can expect fairly decent results in 5-10 minutes. Any longer than that and it will start turning black. If that does happen, simply wash in mild soapy water and try again. Just keep a close eye on it during the process and you'll be fine.

ambro51, it's a joke, just trying inject some humor. If I expressed my true feelings about artificial toning and the people who do it, I would be banned from the forum. I take your response as humorous also. The problem is those jerks do sell their junk at outrageous prices to inexperienced and unsuspecting collectors. What a shame.

Fred, if the coins are as you stated, XF/AU with skin, they probably won't tone very much quickly as they are being stored. if they were BU's the process would be faster.

I conducted a little experiment from 2001 through 2011. I put some BU ( brilliant, all white) silver in a mint set card from 1952, then put them in a manilla envelope. After ten years, the Mercs were beautifully toned, the Washington quarters were nice but not "wow", the Franklins were neutral, with speckled amber, but the warnicks barely toned at all, just a tad pearlescent. My guess is the composition of the warnicks slows the process.
