Advice on starting an autograph collection..presidential.

What advice would you give someone that is a complete novice in this area? Im thinking starting with presidents and major historical figures..what do you wish you would have know?

starting prices...1k or 100k per auto
which auction house...heritage?
who to go to, big names in the field?
what is the best media etc to have the auto on?
