1978 Topps baseball vending box rip! (1975 Mini Wax Pack Rip Next)

It's been a while since I ripped through some unopened product, so in honor of the Mets making it to the World Series, I thought I'd crack open one of the 1978 Topps baseball vending boxes I have on hand, all of which are from the same case. I know vending is generally relegated to the bottom of the list when it comes to ranking the best sources for pulling higher grade cards, but the cards coming out of this vending box thus far are pretty sharp, with above average centering. image

  • Be nice to hit the Eddie Murray and Paul Molitor in perfect condition! This set reminds me of some cellos I sold years ago with Rose, Dawson, & Stargell all on top of each cello in PSA 9!

Excellent! A nice PSA 9 Brett goes for around $130 or so.
Don't jinx the Mets pulling all those nice Royals cards. image
  • Thank you for ripping this in honor of my ROYALS, making it back to the fall classic??

very nice. Are you scanning these into photo bucket, or taking a photo with your phone?

Thanks, guys, I appreciate the kind words! KC fans~even as a Mets fan, I am a big fan of George Brett~I have a run of rack packs from 1975 through 1980 with Brett on top.

Sdub, these cards are scanned~I'm not that savvy with phone pics, lol..

Here are 12 more~I wish the Molitor RC were centered a bit better, as it is razor sharp and smudge free, but it's still a nice pull. image

    Some nice cards Tim.

The Molly lacks the "smudge" - centering just OK though - corners look pretty good.

    Some really nice cards buddy.

    Thanks again, guys!

Pulled the Murray RC~another razor sharp with tough centering. Probably not one to submit but nice for my raw 78 "pack fresh" set. image

Some nice looking pulls. Bummer about the centering on the Murray and Molitor rookies. Some really sharp looking cards with some great centering on a lot of those. Well done so far. Thanks for sharing the rip.

Some nice looking cards, but above all, I like the Murray

Nice hits Tim. Pretty good to get both star RCs in one vending box. Tough luck on centering but very sharp cards for a non graded set for sure.
    Steve
  • Those are some super sharp cards Tim. Too bad the centering isn't better on the Murray.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,735 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks, guys~centering is uniformly pretty good throughout but there's a number of OC cards, too. Corners are predominantly sharp, which makes me want to rip another box at some point in the future, too. I am working on putting together a self-submitted graded set, so this box should yield some nice candidates for submission, at least.

Yes~the Speier has always been one of the toughest cards to find in anything better than NM-MT condition.

I also cracked open 2 77 OPC wax packs, managing to pull one nice and centered card per pack. I am slowly putting together the 77 OPC set, as well.

I like this set looking back at it, but as an 11-year old, I thought it was a let down from the 77s. Thought it was a simple design, but that is what makes it nice now.

    Tim,

Great rip.....too bad that the Murray and Molitor were O/C since they were nice otherwise....but you got some cards that you can send in for your self submitted 78 set. Good Luck!

Thanks, guys! The thing I like about vending is that it takes a lot longer to rip than a single pack, lol..

Will try and scan some more later tonight. Only issue thus far is centering, as cards are very sharp.

Some nice pulls Tim. Is that from the BBCE case break we did a while back? Thanks for sharing the results. Hopefully you pull a nicely centered Ryan.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,735 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks, John. No, these boxes are from a different (and much less expensive, lol) case.

For the sake of your unopened collection, hopefully the Mets don't make this World Series thing a habit.

Ripped four 75 mini packs and pulled a few very nice cards for my set~the Marty Perez is super tough in a 9 and this one has a shot.
