High Selling Price of 1957 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 8- Over VCP & PWCC

I just saw an auction ended for a nice 1957 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 8. It sold for a whopping $6,575. Recently, PWCC sold a "PWCC Certified High End" one for $5,600, and the VCP average is $4,530.92. Just thought it was interesting that this one sold for so much more than they usually do. This example did have very nice centering. It's nice to see high hammer prices on high end vintage cards continue. I added links to the auctions and a pic of the one that sold for $6,575. Do you think this is a trend that will continue for high grade vintage stars? Will they keep going up?

By the way, this is not my card or my auctions at all.

As far as card collecting goes, I think high end vintage Mantles are probably the safest card (category) to buy.

Every time I think prices have plateaud, more and more record highs. And Ill admit to being a contributor to the run up. But, wow, some of these bids...

And now would def be the time to sell into these prices...except I keep buying. image

$8400!!!... is what the '56 Mantle PSA 8 went for in REA last week.

After sitting on ebay for $4-5000 (?) all summer. Im 99% sure it was the same card due to the black mark/spot/defect above his hat in the white border. It is small enough that the REA bidders may not have seen the spot. That was probably a fair price but I didn't think it was worth 5k. Let alone over $8000! Tells you what I know.

That is correct - $8400. I have followed every 56 Mantle sale the last 4 years and it had very nice centering compared to most. Just could not get over the small print dot on the bottom and large one on the top. If the print dot does not bother someone it was a great card and outside of the dots hard to beat.

Im with you on that. The ebay seller said he'd drop the price around $500 but I still couldn't pull the trigger. Otherwise, great card..centering, whites, focus etc

    ...out, out damn spot!

What was the Ebay asking price on the card - I don't remember it and saved pretty much every 56 Mantle 8 for sale.

I had a feeling that you'd catch that reference. Nice.

I found our email conversation thread. This was in early April 2015.

Basically, he offered it to me for 4000 even. ugh. I believe he started at 4500ish. And we had established a pretty good relationship. At the time another went for $4600 so thats prob why i didn't get it, and the spot on the white border. You would probably know him. Used to be around here for a lot of years but then haven't seen him at all after.

I recall he sold a lot of high grade Mantles all at once. 53 (52)'s up to 69. Maybe 7-9 within that range. And all 8s and 9s. What stands out is the centering was unreal. And the prices were great. so good that a lot of members here were a little suspicious. That '56 is the one that hung around for months.

Have a feeling he finally sold it and someone else consigned it and got the $8400.

I figured you would make that connection. Baseball card collector to literary scholar is the perfect match! Thanks for the info on the history of that card, and amazing to think that for $4000-4500 that print would not have been as noticeable image For $6500+ it stands out like a sore thumb. With 300+ 8's out there and 28 examples of 8.5's there will be plenty more left to buy - price might be a little higher this time around though!
