The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

I'm curious if the possibility exists that the picture was taken during an exhibition game in 1973 when the opponent may have been a college team very early into the schedule....

    Just a thought.

Ben Ogilvie did wear #14 with the Red Sox in '72-'73.

  • According to the link you provided, they came to the conclusion that the A's player is Ted Kubiak rather than Dick Green, the runner is Ben Oglivie of the Red Sox, and it is in Fenway Park. In the first game of a doubleheader on July 22, 1972, Oglivie was out at second base in a game ending double play that went shortstop to second baseman to first baseman. Kubiak was the second baseman, Tommy Harper was the batter, and it was a day game.

Hmm so all this time Dick Green has been signing a card that wasn't his picture on it? Ok well I am going to send it to Ben Oglivie via TTM and see if it comes back signed. Thank you all!

Get Kubiak to sign it too and if you get all 3 you'll have a one of a kind probably.

I got an Oglivie back TTM about a month or so ago - he signed two cards for me.

Problem was, I sent them in July 2010 - FIVE years ago! So, not sure if it was just me or what, but be prepared to be patient waiting for your response!

When I wrote him in 2013, I got him back in 23 days.

Looks like some of his more recent returns have taken 3-8 months, but they've all came back. He might just wait for a period to sign em all and send em off. Hope it comes back for ya!

Well got the card back in the mail today! Ben Oglivie did sign it! He didn't send a note or anything to explain if it was or wasn't him so I'll take it!

On a similar note, I got some cards signed by Frank LaCorte. He doesn't like his rookie card which I had provided for him to sign. He ended up giving me some cards from other years he signed. The reason he doesn't like his rookie card (1976 Topps)? It's not him in the photo.

LOL, GDM67 you are right!! Look at the 75 Topps Larry Haney, A's, card, it is Dave Duncan!!

I'm glad it came back! VERY thankful for all y'all's help on figuring out who the mystery base slider was!

    Thanks for sharing.

Ogilvie was real nice in person, almost always a willing signer and always smiling. Not to mention a great hitter.

PS. And yes, I'm pretty sure that's Ted Kubiak in the picture, not Green. The player looks like he's making a throw from SS and Green rarely if ever played SS. You might want to take your chances on a three-bagger and try to get Kubiak to sign. He was always great in person and I think he signs TTM. And, he's got a pretty nice looking autograph.

Glad this ended so well. I always liked Ben. Aside from all the possible personnel snafus, it's a really cool looking card.

Well the quest is finally over with this card! Triple signed! See the pics below from Ted Kubiak and his response! Thanks to everyone for all the help!!

    IMF,

From what I cam make out it's:

"You are correct (illegible) - it is me!"
"Thank you for your service - "
    "I (illegible illegible) enclosed cards
    (illegible) your children - "

    Congrats on completing the quest!

Is the last part "I hope the enclosed cards please your children"? Is it possible the first illegible is your name? That's some pretty awful handwriting. Some context from the letter sent to him may help decipher it .

I don't think the first is my name because it's John, but you are correct on the last illegible part. Now that I look at it!

Congrats on getting it all figured out.

When I lived in AZ, One of our customers was Freddie Jones (Played for the Cardinals) I asked him once if I could bring some cards in to sign and he was more than happy to do it so the next time he came in, I handed him a stack and as he went through them he set one aside saying it wasn't him and didn't sign it. He was a really cool guy. He signed any of his Chargers cards with his uniform # from that team and his Cardinal cards with his current #
