More late night ripping--Hoping to find some gems for the CC monthly special (updated with scans lat

I am liking the price of the CC Special #1 this month at $5.50. I have a stack of Anthony Davis and a handful of Steph Curry cards that will be going in. Fingers crossed big time with this lot. I have been sitting on a stash of unopened modern and junk wax and this special is a great excuse to get those ripped in search of some submittable cards.

First up will be some FB. Obviously looking for a nice Bo to send in.

Bam! First pack out of the box. Oh, the highs and the lows. This was a card away from being the gum card. It survived any adjacent sugary damage. At first glance, I was super fired up as I thought I had a sure fire 9 on my hands with a small possibility for gem upside (the highs). Then I see the dreaded print problem, I think it's referred to as "snow", if not it should be, in Bo's picture around his jersey (the lows). Not sure how that affects the grade. Would that cause this card to have a qualifier and/or make it impossible for a 9?

    Good luck, Steve!

Bo looks to be a 7/8 or 9PD, unfortunately. I hate when that happens. Bad enough you have to contend with centering, gum damage and dings, and only to get zinged on snow.

Yeah, thanks for the confirmation Tim. I figured I was out of luck with the snow. That's a bummer as the card is really pretty sharp otherwise and I think it would have been a nice 9 for the PC. Of course I can just buy a 9 or a 10 already graded, but this was one card I really wanted to try and sub for myself. Oh well, I will have to buy more boxes of 88 FB. Unfortunately, no more Bo's in the box and no Boz's either. I did pull some HOFers but I don't know that any were strong enough to sub or worthwhile to anyway. All was not lost though as the box did yield a lot of 49ers for me. I loved this team and their upset loss to the Vikings in the playoffs was perhaps the most painful loss in my childhood memory. They were the #1 offense and #1 defense in the regular season that year and Jerry Rice scored 22 touchdowns during the strike shortened season (I believe it was in 12 games)! I didn't think they could lose, but of course anything can happen.

Speaking of anything can happen. I pulled all three of these Montana cards in the same pack! Unfortunately, the RB card was the gum card, but still a pretty cool thing to happen. Add these three to the three Montana cards in the scan above and that is a nice haul of my favorite FB player for one box.

Well, the 1988 FB box didn't yield any gradable cards but it was still super fun. I think I paid $15 for it whenever I got it so it was definitely worth the money for the entertainment value. As Belicheck would say "On to 2012 Rookies and Stars". Blaster box so not expecting a lot. Hoping for a gradable Luck or Wilson.

Ok. 2012 Rookies and Stars was a bust. Best card was a Michael Floyd Patch. Oh well, onto 1989 Donruss!

Still a nice Bo, congrats! Good luck with the '89 Donruss!

Thanks Patrick. Yes, that is a nice Bo. I ripped some 88 Topps FB a few months back and had a similar situation where I had a nicely centered Bo with crisp edges and sharp corners but that Bo had print issues with the ink around the borders. Without those print defects I would be sitting with a couple of Mint Bo's. Oh well.

The 1989 Donruss is about 9 packs in and I am a little nervous about the collation. I already have 3 of some players (of course we are talking about Pete Incavigilia and Mike Aldrete instead of Ken Griffey, Jr. I do have a couple of Gary Sheffields. One that is out of the pack and one that is visible on the back of the pack. If the collation gods break right, I could end up with a bunch of Griffeys. If not I could end up with a lot of Mike Aldretes and no Griffeysimage

Sorry about the snow but otherwise that is a really nice Bo! You seem to be a magnet for stud 49'ers. They had massive offensive weapons back then. What happened? Kaepernick, Hyde, Boldin, and T.Smith aren't quite the same as Montana, Craig, Rice, and J.Taylor.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

That bo is still a nice pull. Good luck with pulling some griffeys

dberk12--Yeah, I will have to keep ripping for a shot at a mint or Gem Bo. I have ripped three boxes and I have pulled two centered, mint Bo's that would have been gradable if not for random print defects. Just the world of Topps quality control back then. I have been ridiculously lucky with 49ers in all of my boxes. I am pretty sure I have pulled multiple Montana and Rice cards in each of the three boxes I opened. I guess it helps that they have regular base cards, record breaker cards, league leader cards and in Rice's case a 1000 yard club. Man those teams were loaded. It was great growing up in the SF Bay Area back then. Montana, Rice, Young, J. Taylor, Dwight Clark, Tom Rathman, Ronnie Lott, Charles Haley. Those teams were absolutely loaded.

Thanks for the well wishes craig44. Unfortunately, my Donruss box had brutal collation. I ended up with I believe 4 or 5 of several players, unfortunately none of those players were Griffey or Randy Johnson. I did end up with a Biggio and Sheffield. I had a bunch of HOFers and stars show up on the backs of packs (George Brett, Rickey Henderson, Cal Ripken, Curt Schilling and Gary Sheffield). Unfortunately, the last pack of the box had a Will Clark showing but I was so bummed at not hitting a Griffey that I ripped it without checking the back. I probably would have kept it sealed and put it in my Will Clark collection. Now I've just got a gum stained "Thrill". Anyway, here are the fun pulls from the Donruss box. Will Clark was my favorite player in any sport growing up (hence the 22 in my user name here). I would have been so stoked as a 12 or 13 year old pulling this Gregg Jefferies RC! Do either the Biggio or Sheffield have a shot at a 10?

I went to bed last night after the 89 Donruss rip. A bit of a let down to not pull any Griffey or Big Unit RC's out of that box. So I've decided to up my odds of pulling one of those guys with this bad boy.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

    Thanks Doug!

The 1989 Fleer box was huge fun to rip. I remember being a kid and ripping a ton of 1989 Donruss and Topps and a little of 1989 Score. Oh yeah, and a bunch of 1989 Bowman rack packs. The Woolworths by our junior high sold 89 Bowman rack packs and I remember digging through them looking for a Griffey showing. Never found one showing but I did pull at least a couple out of packs that year. I even opened some packs of the "expensive" $1 packs of Upper Deck. I don't believe I ever opened a single pack of 1989 Fleer at the time. I think because the local retail stores didn't carry it and the LCS priced it in between the cheap packs and the expensive Upper Deck packs. So 26 years later I am ripping my first 89 Fleer packs. Anyway, here are the results. This box was much kinder in star power! In fact, first pack Griffey! Even better was the rack underneath the Griffey, I'll post that one later. Unfortunately, the Griffeys and the Johnson look too OC to sub for 10's. Which version of the Johnson error is this? Do any of the Smoltz or Biggio cards look like possible 10's? Even if there are no gradable cards, considering there are 1008 cards in the box, I beat the odds with 2 Griffeys, 2 Smoltzs and 2 Biggios, so this was a fun rip. Thanks for following along.

Here is the rack that made my night. As I said during the 89 Donruss rip, I accidentally ripped a Will Clark showing on back pack because I wasn't paying attention on the last pack of the box. For the 89 Fleer rack box, this was sitting directly beneath the first rack I picked up. I couldn't miss this one. I will tuck this away with the other Will Clark showing racks I have. I haven't been actively pursuing this collection, but a couple of great members have sent me racks with him showing (thanks Itzagoner and jmaciau) just because they know I collect him. Anyway, this rack made this box a huge success even if I pulled 966 commons with the other 23 racks.

That turned out to be a terrific box, Steve! Well done!

I have a 3-box 89 Fleer rack case buried deep somewhere, which I bought when I was first getting back into collecting cards about 20 years ago. I'm wondering now if any of the racks within have one of the 3 HOF rookie cards on top..

Thanks Tim. I knew I could count on you to be up late with my postsimage Yes, I was very happy with the results of the 89 Fleer rack break. Including some rips I did in the summer, I have ripped: 3 boxes of 88 T FB, 1 box of 89 Pro Set II FB, 3 89 Donruss boxes and the 89 Fleer Rack box. I have done really well star wise with every product except the 89 Donruss. Out of three boxes I believe I only pulled one Griffey. I beat the odds on star RC's in every other box so I can't complain.

Up next, another 1989 Pro Set II box. Hopefully I didn't jinx myself and hopefully the cards look better than the outside of the box!

Oh how I love 1989 Pro Set II! It is the junk wax rip that keeps on giving. I remember ripping boxes of these as a kid and just loving the product. I think I may have hit my first gradable card in this series of rips. Hoping to get a 10 out of this Barry Sanders. Got two Barry's and three Prime Time's. Unfortunately no Aikman's in the box. I did get a couple of Tim Brown's but no Michael Irvin's. All in all, I'm super happy with the results of this box. Twice I got the same player in one pack which is always fun (I remember this occuring back when I opened packs as a kid too) including one pack where the doubles were back to back in the pack. Here's the scans. Thoughts on the Barry and the Deion's? Do any of the Deion's look like Gem's?
