Spike in Griffey Jr RC's

Will Jr. Rookies in high grade see a spike in the next month or two when the class
Is announced for 2016 or does the spike not come until
The actual induction ceremony next summer?

I'd guess when the class is announced. I remember when he retired the three Griffey RC I had listed all sold that same day.

I don't see much of a spike. Griffey has been the biggest lock for the HOF in the modern era.

I've noticed that his 1988 Best Platinum San Bernadino has been sneaking up. For example, in PSA 9 it has doubled in the last 3 years from $450-ish to $800-$1000 range lately. The 10's are bubbling higher steadily too year over year. Pop 11 as of this writing. 224 examples ever graded. They only made 1,300 of these sets, in great contrast to 1989 UD #1.

The iconic '89 UD probably won't move much. Even if thousands of collectors decided they wanted a nice copy the demand will never exceed the supply. The more scarce RCs like the Fleer Glossy or Bowman Tiffany RCs will probably see the biggest increase in value.

Unfortunately, most of Girffey's mainstream rookie cards are from the overprint era. I dont see his Donruss, Fleer, Topps Traded or Score Update doing much in the way of an increase - the supply is still way too high. His UD might see a slight bump, but only a few dollars as there is plenty of those out there as well. I think where you see the bumps are going to be in the way of the harder to get rookies/inserts
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • Who cares? Enjoy the card. Enough of these posts, already. Good lord.

I completely agree and was just answering the question. I love my '89 UD Griffey and whether or not the value goes up or not is irrelevant to me. It is not for sale. image

  • Everyone buys sports cards for different reasons. Some buy them for the fun of collecting, investing, for the fun of building sets, flipping, etc. So there are clearly people who care. If you are not interested in discussing Jr Rookies spiking in value, then go to a different thread.
  • It is spiking.

If you don't like a thread click your back arrow. Why waste time posting on. And like another poster said
If we didn't have random topics like this the board would not be as fun. I don't collect hockey cards but sure won't criticize someone for
    Posting about them

I think we'd survive without VintagemanEd.
  • Ed, the card has been on the move for some time. For quite awhile it ranged in the 200+ area. Then, anticipation set in. It turned into a $300+ card. It's steadily progressing. If you want to INVEST in this card, my opinion is that you've waited too long. If you want to make a few bucks flipping the card, it could probably still be done. His popularity won't decrease unless he gets arrested or some online rag like TMZ posts lies about him. image

There's a major difference between "different strokes for different folks" and people like you who seem to have no interest in the hobby except for the monetary value and investment. It's a major downer.
  • Perhaps if Ed became more passionate about the current value of a Mantle card only Arabian sheiks can afford, we would be more willing to tolerate his posts.
  • It has nothing to do with elitism and everything to do with single-mindedness.

Charrigan....sorry your having issues with my posts. Again... How about you don't click on them. Do I need to post about my
Large quantities of 80's junk that are not worth anything to prove my passion for the hobby?
Very silly to even be writing this. Anyway... I want to thank the good and knowledgable collectors on these boards that chime in with thoughts and info

Ed - to be objective, all your posts are about investment future of card. It doesnt bother me but I can see how some members are tired of it.

I could see them moving higher. I doubt you will see an explosion but there are certain cards that are staples of the hobby and the 89 Upper Deck is certainly one of them. Like others I would think some of the lower print run cards have a higher chance for appreciation.

I was fortunate enough to open a sealed 89 Fleer Glossy set and nail a PSA 10 Griffey a few years back. My wife wanted a new purse so I sold a few baseball cards to cover the costs and that was one of them. I believe I got in the neighborhood of $1,100 for it. If you check completed listings the card has sold in the range of $1,275 to $1,699 so it has moved up in the past few years.

They may be impossible to locate but if you can find them at a reasonable price I think buying some raw Jr minor league cards would be a good bet if you are going for investment only.

On a side not I sent in my best raw 1989 Upper Deck example and it is at PSA now. I suspect it will grade an 8 because of a corner but I wanted it slabbed so that shows there is still interest from unsuspecting sources for his cards.

I would think the tiffany rookies or the minor league cards would do the best investment wise

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I do not anticipate any dramatic spike in the value of Ken Griffey Jr. rookie cards.
