1980 Topps Basketball Set Registry Completion

I've been collecting the 1980 Topps basketball set for quite a while, it's one of my all-time favorites. Last week I finally completed the set in all 9's and 10's after getting a tough one - Johnson/Davis/Archibald. While I am very happy about completing my set, I'm so thrilled to see Rich (Barron of Bird/Magic) be the first one to complete it in all 10's. Back in 2009 I sold him my set, #5 at the time, and he upgraded it to the #1 set by 2012. Just this past week he finished it off, every card is PSA 10! Here is his set.

HOF set, congrats again Rich!

  • That's awesome. I remember having a bunch of theses as a kid. Of course because they were perforated I tore them all apart.

As someone who purchased another high-end 80-81 set from you and is working on upgrading it to a PSA 9 average, I offer congrats and stand in amazement at the sets you and Barron have completed.

Just how much of this product do/did you have and how in the world did you keep it in such good shape?

    Hey Mike!

I never collected this set as a kid, I was only 4 when it came out. But, the Bird/Magic RC was always a favorite during my younger collecting years. When I got back into collecting around '02 I started picking up lots and making sets, keeping the nicest for my personal set. I've opened boxes (back when they were around $500), bought vending boxes (usually with Bird/Magic's pulled), and would buy almost any set or lot for many years. Fast forward to today and I have over 10,000 raw cards, and a bunch of graded.

I posted this on a thread years ago, but a non-documented error (at least not in the SCD Baseball Bible - which is why PSA won't recognize the error) is in the set. They are fairly hard to find as I believe Topps caught the error early. But, it's on two cards - Phegley/Silas/Tyler & Monroe/Silas/Tyler - the error has James spelled "Jams." Here's the error along with a few Bird/Magic's image:

    Matt

Not only thanks for sharing the cards in this thread, but thanks for sharing the PSA 8 set you sold me + the remainder of the cards I needed for the set I started in 1980.

When I was 12 (1979), I was a young Celtics fan who followed the Indiana State vs. Michigan State Championship series and could not wait until Bird was on the Celtics. To my surprise in 1980, Bird, Magic, and Dr. J were on the same card and the two rookies were on 9 cards total. I bought a few packs in 1980 and was lucky enough to get the iconic card. The one I pulled from a pack had print spots on it but nonetheless, it was the pride of my collection as it was easy to forecast that the card would be one that went down in history as one of the biggest cards ever.

I didn't collect much of anything from 1984-1988 but was able to get more packs in 1989 to further my set. Throw a few more singles in the late 1990's and early 2000's and I was close.

Then Matt came along to finish it off in 2015 - 35 years in the making.

You are a true collector and your help in finishing off this collector's set is so much appreciated.

I owe you a lot of gratitude as I now have a PSA 8.80 average set + a raw set. If you were in front of me I would undoubtedly hug you as it is my favorite basketball set ever.

As for the Silas error = wow, never knew that!

One just closed recently in a Probstein auction for $604 including shipping.

It makes no sense to me that they will not recognize the error. No way that could be a print defect as the spacing would not allow for it. It as clear cut example of an error and corrected version as could ever exist.

Wowsa... doubt that gets paid for. No way it bumps with the snow and nick below the 'N' in Johnson. Love this set though! Only have a raw set, but I try to scrutinize each card to the nth degree... big fan of the "Jams" errors as well.

Matt is good people and also helped me complete my raw mint set last year. Congratulations on a heck of an achievement.

Like to the error card. It's amazing how PSA "has to follow SCD" in order for something to be considered and error or variation. i would think at this point PSA would dictating things to SCD not the reverse. Kind of like the local high school dictating to the NFL what rules they should follow.

Work hard and you will succeed!!
