Rough box but packs appear to be ok. Any damage to the packs?

Good luck if you decide to rip!

LMAO!!! Hilarious analogy. Seriously, let's get to ripping and scanning the results please. There may be a PSA 10 Hendu hidden in one of those packs.

The prequel: (for those that want to skip this boring monolog scroll down to the bottom):

Growing up in the Bay Area, 1980 was the word. The few clear memories I have of my childhood, are mostly of sports. The 1980 NFC championship game; Niners vs. Dallas; standing behind my brother in a recliner chair, watching Clark make “the catch”…going crazy. It was the beginning of what Debartolo called Camelot, and Montana/Walsh lead the gang of HOF’s to become a legend in my mind. Although two new guys are pushing that envelope right now (Posey/Curry).

My Dad used to bring home packs of ’75 mini’s from San Francisco, and my brothers and I would each get one. My Dad was a big Reds fan, and I naturally liked anything he liked. We’d literally fight over Bench/Rose/Morgan/Perez. All of my Reds cards from the 70’s are beat to hell. I didn’t start buying packs for myself until ‘77-78.

I was a very productive and entrepreneurial kid. Always working; paper route, mowing lawns, yard maintenance, working at the local businesses (you know, the stuff that kids don’t do anymore); these jobs gave me some disposable income….and all of it went into cards. And boy, I bought a lot of them.

From ’78-’83 I cleaned out just about every store in Menlo Park. I missed the mark by about 5 years, as my window of collecting was the beginning of the junk era, but still held some value. The concept of “condition” for cards was just starting on the radar, at least for me. I have some ’82 sets that I labeled mint. So something must have been happening in my mind to consider condition. I also keep a little stash of unopened, and to this day, my Dad, son, and I, open about 2 packs per year together.

    image

    image

    image

My mom was very religious about keeping my cards in good condition, and not throwing anything away. Between college and a few rentals in my 20’s, the cards were well kept for 15 years until I settled down in the Bay Area. Since I returned to the hobby 5 years ago, I have yet to go through any of these cards, nor I have sent any to PSA for grading. Just found these lying around in boxes this week for your viewing pleasure; untouched for 30 years:

    image

    image

Never had enough money to buy cards from the early 70’s, even though those cards bring back wonderful emotions for me. They were always out of reach….until 5 years ago when I got back into collecting PSA 9’s from ’70-’77. When I bought my first PSA 9 (Winfield ’74), I had a hard time understanding how a card like that could be in such pristine condition after 40 years. Who could possibly keep such a card in such great condition…genius. Since then, I’ve been feasting on 9’s. I'm working on a photo bucket album, but most of these bad boys are off site locked away.

And then….there was Rickey. While Montana was making his legendary mark, Rickey was burning up the base paths. My Ricky rookies got the dreaded screw down case, where they still reside after 35 years.

I was huge Rickey fan. My dad would take me to card shows and we would mostly look, but he enjoyed watching me with excitement. I remember one show in the East Bay and they were auctioning off a signed Babe Ruth baseball. It went for $200, which seemed like a lot to us.

    Without further delay. The rip.

Special thanks to Steve Hart at BBCE. I had reached out to him during the FASC box condition issue with the 1980 topps case break. Since I was going to rip anyway, we both agreed that he would break the seal and review the packs. Turns out the packs were in excellent shape, and we made a transaction.

Please note, there are 38 other folks that have a FASC box of these cards. Quick disclaimer; In no way does this box, or these cards, represent the condition of the other boxes and cards.

But First, a pack from my stash for comparison. I personally bought this pack in 1980. Centering wasn't all that great with these.

  • Thanks for sharing the rip. A fond memory growing up that I have is my best friend at the time showing me a new game while I was sorting thru 1993 Fleer Ultra. Some card game with artistic pictures that require some sort of strategy. Yes, Magic: The Gathering. Instead of buying boxes of that stuff, I was all about Ultra and Stadium Club.

Can't believe your mom kept your cards in good shape...don't hear that often...great story, I enjoyed reading and love that hendu got the screw down holders, lol...it was all about screw down holders for the best cards. Hope the rest of the packs have some studs and a nice hendu..the centering looks nice. Thanks for sharing!!

Not only was it about screw down holders for the best cards, but the thicker the screw down holder the better the card was! I remember having 1/2" bricks around my 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas rookie cards at shows - darn case weighed 100 lbs with a dozen Thomas rookies, a few Griffey's, and some Marino rookies.

Oh yeah, I had me some of those bricks. And you're right, the bigger the better. I had two cards I deemed worthy of the one inch screw downs a Bird Magic RC and a 1986 Fleer MJ RC. In an unusual and fortuitous moment of good judgement, the teenage me looked at the cards in their lucite fortresses and noticed "hey, the corners of my MJ RC are a different color than the rest of the card". Of course this was due to the thousands of pounds of pressure being applied by the "protective" holder. In another rare moment of clear headed thinking by the teenage me, I decided to remove the cards from what would have been their cardboard tombs and took them out of the one inch slabs and put them into screw down holders with a recessed area for the cards. They stayed there for 20+ years before being safely removed. In one of my brief returns to the hobby in 2008 the MJ would grade a BGS 9!

Thanks for sharing your rip! And thanks for sharing the back story. I love hearing stories about the history of how we all started collecting and how we came back to it.

I don't know a lot about this set, but I believe, from reading these boards, is that the major factor between a Henderson 9 and 10 is registration/print defects. The packs you've opened have pretty good color, registration and I don't really see any major print issues. I think this may be a good sign for the rest of the boxes for those in hope of finding a Henderson PSA 10.

two more packs went down tonight. Centering and overall quality of the cards is great. No warping on any of these cards.

Still haven't had any major hits. Unless you consider Eddie Murray (touch OC)/Carlton (70/30OC)/McCovey (90/10OC) major:

Nice centering on that batch. I grabbed a box from the FASC break but won't rip it and probably won't keep it. Luckily mine looks like it came from the center of the case and is pristine. If I move it I will do it on the board and not Ebay.

Thank you much for sharing the results of your box. My cojones are the size of cheese puffs, therefore I'm living vicariously through you.

Some aesthetically pleasing baseball cards you're unearthing thus far. I'm rooting hard for a well-framed exemplar of that dude who once stole 130 bases in a single season. (That is so sick when you really stop to think about it.)

    Best of luck going forward!

We're half done with the box. Not much excitement. have about 40 cards that look amazing, scanned a few below. Can't find anything wrong with them (exclude stars), but please tear these apart for me.

Lots of doubles, which is interesting. Pulled a Ryan this evening, but off center.

I've never sent anything in for grading, and probably not going to start with these.

Great read and fun rip to watch. 1980 was one of the first years I remember.
  • Seems strange to have so many dupes. I know it wasn't an exact science back then, but I think it's a little odd personally.

Duplicate sequences are not uncommon for this era~what would be concerning is if collation is off, but it appears correct from what I can tell. Check the sheet letters on back of each card~in a standard 1980 pack from the back seal, the first 8 cards should be from either low letters sheets (A-C) or high letter sheets (D-F) with subsequent 7 cards being from the opposite lettered sheets.

Great rip. You are either accumulating an impressive 1980 set or about to help someone else. This set has some nostalgia for me because it is the first year where I can remember opening packs. I always searched for the Reggie Jackson card while my dad told me about this dynamic Henderson guy in Oakland. Thanks for posting.

Down to about 6 packs. Ripped these tonight. My guess is over 35% of the cards in this box would be 9's min.

The value of a graded 9 or 10 from this year should go up as a result of this box rip. It was very hard to find mint cards right out of the pack!
    Enjoy your collection!

As I mentioned before, i haven't sent any of my cards in for grading. However, I've reviewed thousands of cards myself in my cardboard lab, 99% being PSA 9's from 70-77. So I have a pretty good idea what a 9 looks like.

I'm also not a ripper. This is the first box I've ever ripped, other than some modern with my son.

That being said, the cards I'm looking at from this box are gorgeous. Is this a common occurrence with 1980's cards? Do most boxes ripped from this era have a large amount of 9's and 10's?

Lastly, I'm still getting lots of doubles, and some triplicates of players. So if there is a Henderson in one of the boxes, there could be multiples of him.

Here is some examples of the pack tonight; after I watched Curry drain two 45 footers in the 3rd quarter.

Thanks for sharing the rip. Lots of people here appreciate seeing multiple scans of a vtg rip in progress. If these cards are not destined to stay in your PC, remember to do your research before you sub them. There are plenty of PSA 10's from the 1980 set that sell for less than grading fees, let alone the hundreds of 9's that sell for a lot less than the fees too.
  • SdubSdub Posts: 736 ✭✭✭

I liked the Topps set that had the facsimile autograph on them. Though Topps messed it up in 2007 and 2008 when they tied it again. A lot of them were hard to see!!
