Benito Santiago Topps cards

I have an abstract question for you knowledgeable fellows. Does anyone know of a Topps card of Benito Santiago with the Topps rookie cup on it?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

I think 1987 would have been the year he would have qualified but the award went Andy Allanson that year.

None that I'm aware of unless there's a recent 'cards that never were' type issue.

Thanks. I have been looking as I'm going to start an autograph collection of all of the rookie of the year catchers and was going to do the run on the Topps card that shows the cup. I had found all but one for Benito Santiago and don't see one having ever been made. I appreciate the confirmation. Now I've got to decide what to do about Benito! image

I guess I'll just go with his first year Topps card if I can't figure something else out. Thanks again for the help!

    There isn't one.

His first Topps card was in the 87 Traded set. Those don't have the rookie cups.
His 88 card didn't have one either. The catcher rookie cup went to Matt Nokes.

And yes, the completionist in me realizes the futility of this with a '71 Thurman but I'm going to have fun with it.

This is an awesome idea for a project! I hope you'll start a thread and keep us updated. Can't wait to see your 69 Bench!

Thanks all. I'm looking forward to this project. I have a couple coming in that I will send off to PSA for authentication and slabbing and I will start a thread once I start getting some coming in. I have a feeling this will start with the baseball writers rookies of the year and expand to other awarded rookies of the year. And then bishop goes and shows me those cool flyers showing the winners of the Topps all star rookie cup each year and that has my mind spinning too. image Catchers only though.

Thanks for all the insights and encouragements!

What year are starting with? There are several year runs in the 70'sand 80's where Topps decided to forgo the logos.

Right now I'm just going to start with the BBWAA rookies of the year that happened to be catchers and using their Topps rookie cup cards for the autos (notwithstanding Benito Santiago of course).

So that goes back to :

    Bench in '68
    Munson in '70
    Earl Williams in '71
    Fisk in '72
    Benny Santiago in '87
    Sandy Alomar Jr in '90
    Piazza in '93
    Geovany Soto in '08
    Posey in '10

From there I'll add Jason Kendall and Gary Carter to complete out another couple of lists - Sporting News rookie of the year and Baseball Digest rookie of the year.

Should be a fun chase. I'll buy some and try and do some TTM or private signings for others.

I may eventually go back and look at all the catchers that have a rookie cup logo on the card. That's down the road a piece though.

  • Gotcha now. Thought you wanted to do the entire run. I love signed rookie cup logo cards, I started with collecting them and now I almost exclusively collect signed cards. Good luck with the quest. The Munson will be a beast like you said, but I've seen a handful around. Here's my Bench. Happy collecting!

Me too. But he fell in love with the home run thanks to his juiced ball numbers from 1987. And he couldn't figure out how to hit a curveball. And that was that.

I was collecting signed trophy cards for the last 5+ years or more, but it has gotten to be nearly impossible to get newer cards at anything other that ultra premium prices. I could try to get them signed TTM, but I never hjad the patience or motivation. I have maybe 95% of the cards from 1960-2005 including those on the team in the non-trophy years of 74, 79-86 (No Munson, Ichiro or Jeter, but the rest of the big names are there) and then my completion percentage takes a giant dump!
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

All those players had decent rookie seasons in their respective years of being named for the award. I'm curious about what the stat is on approx. what percentage of the All-Star Rookie winners went on to HOF careers, maybe including those worthy of a good number of votes even if they didn't get voted in? It's probably disappointingly low. For every one like the '68 Seaver, '69 Bench, '60 McCovey, '71 Munson, etc., there are a whole pile of guys who went on to very sub-par careers after being an AS Rookie.

I'll agree that getting the newer players is much tougher than veterans and retired players. The best method I have found to combat this is consigning cards to spring training graphers. In most instances I can get the new guys for $10-$20 a pop. For the bigger names I just bite the bullet and pay the premium. I overpaid for the first authenticated Trout that popped up and I've only seen a couple since. Harper took awhile and I had a couple I took a chance on fail authentication. I won't pony up the premium for Puig, just can't justify it for guy demoted to platoon duty when he is healthy.
