Okay maybe to you this guy is not that big of deal, but where I live he is a legend. We went to the same High School and college. He actually used to mow my grandparents lawn while in school. I will admit it and you probably can tell by the pic I had been having a good time at the tailgate for several hours before I see him walk through the gate. I looked at my son and I said there is an all time great. I spoke with him for a bit and asked him about old times, and talked about some memories I had watching him as a kid. From the "Warrior" he had written on the tape on his shoe, to harrassing Danny White in the NFC title game. His favorite part was when I told him about an interview I heard with Ronnie Lott where he stated "James Dean was not as cool as Fred Dean"
Here is the pic, and yes I make a big man look average size

<< <i>Fred Dean was a great player. I am always impressed when guys are able to recognize some of these retired players, especially football players since their faces are generally covered with their helmets. You are a big dude! I did not recognize him from the picture so I thought you were posting about a running back when I saw the picture not a HOF D lineman. Glad to hear it sounds like Dean is a cool guy and gave you a nice fan experience. >>
I am 6'6 and he liked it as much as me. He loves talking about those seasons with the 9ers.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
That is awesome. I grew up in the 80's watching those great 49er teams. I remember him racking up sacks for us. He was the beginning of a pretty good run of pass rushers for us.

<< <i>Of course it took a LAWN reference to get Matt to post! LOL

<< <i>One - of many! - totally dumb moves the Dolts made was trading Fred to SF. But, of course, living in SD, you get used to the Spanos goofs pulling another dumb stunt. >>
Spanos isn't the one who sent Fred to SF. It was Gene Klein. Klein was notorious for trading players who initiated contract disputes, including John Jefferson (who would be a HOFer if he'd stayed with the Chargers). Klein traded him to Green Bay.
Spanos didn't buy into the Chargers until 1984, and Fred went to the 49ers in 1981, as a result of a contract dispute.
