Why no 51 Bowman Joe DiMaggio ?

Always wondered why no Joe D card for 51. Anybody have the scoop ?

No contract with Bowman. He was also absent in 48, 49, and 50.

In the days for the players association, companies had to negotiate with each player individually to use their likeness. Some guys just thought they were worth more than Topps, Bowman, etc wanted to pay. Other had exclusive contracts with rivals (why no Mantle in 54-55 Topps).

For those interested in who is in or out of the Topps and Bowman sets from 51 to 55 you might enjoy the paperback book by Dean Hanley ( Dean's Cards) entitled "The Bubble Gum Card War, The Great Bowman & Topps Sets From 1948 to 1955" Pretty cheap on Amazon or eBay
