When the Kennedy Half Dollars came out people were hoarding them to honor
the fallen President. Same year was the last year for 90% silver in circulating coins.

Hoarders pulled Walkers and Franklins. Didn't have to look at the date to see
if it was silver. They are still worth a premium to 90% quarters and dimes.

Kennedys were silver (1964) then 40%, then junk. Never understood the 40% phase.

Vending machines started taking bills. So it was nickels, dimes, quarters, bills.

Yes, I am 69 and Mercs circulated widely along with Walkers. By the time I started
to notice (1954-1955?) SLQs were very rare in circulation. Banks still had Silver Dollars for
    a paper dollar.
