Here's a new eBay problem. How would you handle it?
 of 4-17-04 004.jpg)
I received an email this morning (not through eBay) from a buyer who purchased a $30 coin on March 6, (6.5 months ago). Claims he never received it and wants to know what I'm going to do about it. I have the tracking number, but of course it is no longer in the USPS system. Do I just nicely say, "Sorry, it's been 6 1/2 months. Why didn't you contact me sooner?
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

check?
Did he leave you feedback? I presume he did not.
Do you not check on your solds for delivery? My sold list shows the USPS tracking number and I don't
remove from the list until they say it has been delivered. At that point I then archive it.
I see how you are very frustrated with selling on ebay!
How much was the coin? Unless it's really cheap I don't see how the buyer could not notice that
he never received it.

edited: I didn't see the $30, I guess it was cheap enough to slip under the radar.
The PO records have been purged and there is no way of establishing if it was delivered or not.
Due to the amount of time since the transaction, why did the buyer wait so long to contact?
I'd listen to the response and then offer to send some consolation prize.

He waited 6 1/2 months for its arrival........didn't you read the OP post?

He slept on his rights, and even eBay would agree. He can't open a case or do anything feedback related.
Just be sure to block him.
there is little to do here , even if one could track it what would it prove the coin would of either been returned to you or delivered in that time.
Its 6 months later and nothing can be done here. The tiny possibility of actual loss is there but even that can not be established or claimed at this point.
My response would be : Thank you for your email. We have not received any returned items and due to the time that has passed cannot file a claim for loss.

That is 100% the correct response. There's a "statute of limitations" in the guarantees behind any sale. Any issues need to be raised in a reasonable and timely manner. And block that buyer from future purchases.
<< <i>Wait 6 1/2 months and then reply he is too late to report he didn't get his item.

Bold for the point.

<< <i>I agree with what was said earlier. Tell him you'll check with PO but offer nothing more. If PO can help great, if not, time is well past freshness date. Sorry Sir. >>
I doubt they could help other than to confirm that it was delivered, if indeed it was.

Tell him to be patient and to give it a little more time.

Agree. This is what I would do.

There was a thread similar to this several months back and the consensus iirc was just to ignore the email.

This is what I would do as you provided the tracking number to the buyer. The only other thing I would do is ask them what the post office told the when they checked the tracking over the last 6 1/2 months.

You would be better off doing it yourself so you know exactly what the PO would tell him. You'd want to verify it anyway.
I would also block him.

Let him fuss, or most likely, go away, since it smells like a scam.

Red flag #2... he's contacting you outside eBay.
Ask him to confirm his personal info (ebay handle, shipping address etc.) via eBay messages to see if this is even the same person.
If it's not the same info, ignore him. Scam.
If it is, tell him you'll check with the USPS to confirm shipment if it is possible at this late date, but that's basically all you can do since too much time has passed. I see no reason to reward him with anything other than some basic due diligence to try to locate the shipping info. Assuming this is the same guy. For all you know you could be dealing with someone who hacked the real guy's account and he's going through the guy's transactions to try to get money or something.
Whatever you do, do NOT bring up filing a case. You are probably OK even if he does, but I rule nothing out with eBay- particularly if the item's no longer trackable. This could be his angle to try to get refunded ("they never sent it, no tracking proves it", etc.).
