Here's a new eBay problem. How would you handle it?

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
I received an email this morning (not through eBay) from a buyer who purchased a $30 coin on March 6, (6.5 months ago). Claims he never received it and wants to know what I'm going to do about it. I have the tracking number, but of course it is no longer in the USPS system. Do I just nicely say, "Sorry, it's been 6 1/2 months. Why didn't you contact me sooner?

6.5 months is way too long to claim item not received...."i would think"
yup be courteous saying if this was within acceptable time frame you'd be more then happy to assist him but can not due to the excessive time that has past

get ready with your tracking to call ebay

by all means pm me his ebay handle if you prefer not to out this knucklehead

I once had someone claim something didn't show up, and when I proved it was delivered via USPS, they were able to look through their car and find it. My guess is the person received it, but now has misplaced it, so it must have not come--right... Like others have said. See if you can get the info from USPS (in person visit), and that should prove it was delivered. Good Luck.

Might just respond that you got his message. You will check with the PO and go from there. Can they
    check?
Did he leave you feedback? I presume he did not.

Do you not check on your solds for delivery? My sold list shows the USPS tracking number and I don't
remove from the list until they say it has been delivered. At that point I then archive it.

I see how you are very frustrated with selling on ebay!

How much was the coin? Unless it's really cheap I don't see how the buyer could not notice that
    he never received it.

    Tell him the truth.
The PO records have been purged and there is no way of establishing if it was delivered or not.
Due to the amount of time since the transaction, why did the buyer wait so long to contact?

I'd listen to the response and then offer to send some consolation prize.

Go to your Post Office first. Ask the P. O. person you get along with best to help you. Just because you can't see the tracking info doesn't mean that the USPS people can't find it.

Wait 6 1/2 months and then reply he is too late to report he didn't get his item.

He slept on his rights, and even eBay would agree. He can't open a case or do anything feedback related.
Just be sure to block him.

30 days period is the time span to decide if an item was received or not.

there is little to do here , even if one could track it what would it prove the coin would of either been returned to you or delivered in that time.

Its 6 months later and nothing can be done here. The tiny possibility of actual loss is there but even that can not be established or claimed at this point.

My response would be : Thank you for your email. We have not received any returned items and due to the time that has passed cannot file a claim for loss.

That is 100% the correct response. There's a "statute of limitations" in the guarantees behind any sale. Any issues need to be raised in a reasonable and timely manner. And block that buyer from future purchases.

Just yesterday I had someone (international) tell me a package sent in June didn't arrive. June of 2014, mind you.

I agree with what was said earlier. Tell him you'll check with PO but offer nothing more. If PO can help great, if not, time is well past freshness date. Sorry Sir.

I doubt they could help other than to confirm that it was delivered, if indeed it was.

I would provide him with a tracking number and have him go to the post office and ask them for help. Tell him there isn't anything you can do now that he waited so long.

I remember from the recent past an update iirc that we were advised to keep tracking info for 6 months even though USPS doesn't make it available that long. I don't recall if it was a PayPal or Ebay update.

There was a thread similar to this several months back and the consensus iirc was just to ignore the email.

Why even give this any consideration after the amount of time? Waaaaaaay beyond any reasonable time period. forget it.

This is what I would do as you provided the tracking number to the buyer. The only other thing I would do is ask them what the post office told the when they checked the tracking over the last 6 1/2 months.

You would be better off doing it yourself so you know exactly what the PO would tell him. You'd want to verify it anyway.

I would give him the tracking number, ship date, what USPS said about when it was received by him and then ignore him. I keep a log in my Sales Journal of tracking number and buyer receipt date per USPS. He could have received the item and misplaced it / forgotten about it. Either way I would fight him on any kind of ebay case or non receipt claim. I guess there are scammers who keep a log of items to go back six months later to scam sellers on some kind of phony non receipt thing.

    I would also block him.

Asking, "Why didn't you contact me sooner?" invites further contact from the buyer/scammer. Stating, "It's been 6 1/2 months and the package can no longer be tracked. You should have contacted me sooner," is more final. Had you shipped insured, the time limit for filing a claim is 60 days (APO/FPO/DPO is 180 days). The sooner you wash your hands of this buyer, the better.

Tell him him since it has been so long, he needs to open a case since USPS does not contain the records on-line that far back.

Just state the tracking number and state that is was delivered, according to the Post Office records.

Let him fuss, or most likely, go away, since it smells like a scam.

Red flag #1... it's been 6.5 months, and he's just now contacting you.
Red flag #2... he's contacting you outside eBay.

Ask him to confirm his personal info (ebay handle, shipping address etc.) via eBay messages to see if this is even the same person.

If it's not the same info, ignore him. Scam.

If it is, tell him you'll check with the USPS to confirm shipment if it is possible at this late date, but that's basically all you can do since too much time has passed. I see no reason to reward him with anything other than some basic due diligence to try to locate the shipping info. Assuming this is the same guy. For all you know you could be dealing with someone who hacked the real guy's account and he's going through the guy's transactions to try to get money or something.

Whatever you do, do NOT bring up filing a case. You are probably OK even if he does, but I rule nothing out with eBay- particularly if the item's no longer trackable. This could be his angle to try to get refunded ("they never sent it, no tracking proves it", etc.).
