What's your favorite 1980s baseball set?

I've had the epiphany today to sell a very nice 1975 cello box I have and put together a 1980's set. I'm thinking of a couple but wanted some input on what everyone else likes too. Thanks for taking the poll!

    1984 Donruss.

+1 Cleanest, best looking front and easy to read backs, set since 1967 Topps. Only exception to them is the limited yearly stats.

write in vote for 1985 Fleer. Not a fan of 1981-1984 Donruss. 84 is ok. I thought 1985 Donruss was their best looking set by far, still prefer Fleer.

Of the choices, 1987 Donruss. It was right when I started collecting and was always sought after. It's a really fun rip with a wide variety of HOFers and steroid rookies.

84 Donruss. I also like the design of the 88 Fleer.

I always thought 1985 Donruss was underrated. Sharp cards.

For the purposes of the question asked, my vote is for 1984 Fleer Update, with 1986 Topps Traded/Tiffany being number 2. Smaller checklists and pretty nice star power and cool designs. However, if I were to start building an 80's set I would probably choose 1986 Topps FB or one of the Fleer BK sets. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Wow interesting that both '84 Donruss and '87 topps got a couple write ins. I excluded the '84 sets because it had no chances to get a hall of fame rookie and the '87 topps because it missed the Maddux rookie or should I say I included the '87 Donruss/leaf because they were the only set to include his rookie.

I didn't factor player selection into my choice, thought it was more of an aesthetic question. But I'll stick with '87 Topps. Fond memories of the Bo Jackson, Will Clark, McGwire, Canseco, Greenwell, Palmeiro, Bonds, Wally Joyner, Kevin Mitchell and the Record Breakers cards.

80 and 83 Topps are my two favorites from the decade. 82 Topps has the most significance to me personally, though, as that was the year I was really into cards and remember buying a full wax box from the tobacco shop with my paper route money and opening all 36 packs when I got home.

I always liked 84 Topps, though it barrowed from 83, I always thought the design was ahead of its time. 80 though is a close second.

1980 is my favorite as I was heard core collecting at the age of 10 back then. I also loved 1983. 1985 was cool trying to get as many McGwires as I could as he was my gamble out of the gates. But in the end ya can't beat 1980...favorite card to pull was yaz.

Looks like the start of a potentially sizable investment into an awesome project. 1983 Topps is classic to me and head and shoulders above the others, particularly with the big 3. Oddly enough, I really like the back of the cards too. I didn't collect in 1983 and could never afford to buy these packs, so they actually had a mystique to me.

1985 Donruss would be my second and 1985 Topps my third choice.

    Best of luck!

Well I'm not surprised at all the '83 Topps set came out on top it's truly the best in my opinion too, but wow there was no love for the '85 leaf/Donruss at only 1 vote. I like the look of the leaf set myself, but at only 1 vote I can't pick that as my choice. And the '83 set like such a monumental undertaking with so many cards in the set I'm not going there either.

I think I've made my choice but alas my '75 cello box didn't garner any interest at what I thought was a good price so I will be on hold until that goes to a good home. I hope what some are saying about unopened interest going down doesn't come true until the box gets sold image

I never quite got the appeal of the '81 set and Raines will be very tight in making it so the set might end up not having any HOF rookie in it. I think will hurt it long term like the '84 set.

I do really like your '84 Fleer update set idea though so I'm going to try and complete that one. It's a nice sized set at 132 and I do have a bit of a start there anyway.

write-in vote for '84 Donruss. I remember buying a factory set for $450.00 image

I remember that most of the superstars were between #50-100. Plus the fact that it was such a short production run.

Interesting how Mattingly was not a rated rookie.

1987 for sentimental reasons, 1980 and 1981 Topps are where my current focus is for the 80s... with 83 a close 3rd.

I think the biggest thing with 81, despite the lack of rookies, is that it's lumped in with 78-80 as having smaller print runs and being harder to find in high grade (with 82 starting the "modern but not junk" era). I like the design as well, and there's just something beautiful about a blazer from that set.

84 Donruss. The Mattingly and Carter are classic must have cards, IMO.

1980 and 1981 are the only 2 sets I like from the 80's Tons of great hall of famers.

Raines, Parker, Murphy, and Garvey should all be in the hall of fame. They were all superstars.

  • olb31olb31 Posts: 3,479 ✭✭✭✭✭
The best looking set is the 1987 Fleer. And I don't think that it is even close. All of the topps products and really dull (1986 football is downright ugly) I don think the 1989 topps/opc hokcey set looks good though.

If we are talking about a favorite set because of its content, then the 1984 and 1986 topps football sets, 1983 Topps baseball set, 1986, 1987 and 1988 Fleer basketball sets.
Work hard and you will succeed!!
