The Great Divide: Major Stars vs. Everything Else

It seems like prices for PSA 9/10 vintage cards other than major stars peaked several years ago and have fallen off quite a bit since, while major stars keeping hitting new heights. I've purchased quite a few 1972 PSA 9s lately, and the VCP data seems pretty consistent on this trend. Last example was a PSA 9 1972 Aparicio. I admit I've only looked at early '70s cards. Does this trend hold for all vintage sets? Does it indicate a decreased interest in registry set collecting, or only decreased competition for certain specific sets? Interested in opinions.

The non-stars that I've been following from the mid 70s to early 80s have fallen off a lot over the last year unless it's a pop 5 and under. They sit at lower BIN prices and don't move. My guess is that everyone that wants one already has one. It doesn't look like a function of pop increases either.

I believe all of your thoughts are true. Stars are the premium always. Then you have registry Collectors who once they finish off the set no longer need to purchase more so prices decline for common players. And what is left off is the possibility that more cards have graded in the range you are searching the past few years. So when you combine star Collectors, registry completion and more cards graded you get little to no price increase. In hour case a decline.

Tougher, lower pop common 75 minis remain very strong overall for the most part.
