1909-Svdb Lincoln Cent 67Rd

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,997 ✭✭✭✭✭
I noticed the pop recently jumped on this coin in 67RD to 12 from 8 or 9 as I recall. The 67RD coin in the Heritage Sept Long Beach sale failed to sell - something I don't recall happening with this date in this grade ever when offered at auction (correct me if I am wrong on that). Before the pop increase, the last auction coin had sold at $100k hammer I believe in 3/14. Does anyone know what this coin last week did not sell at? I wasn't following it.

I did not follow this coin as it's well out of my collecting reach, but the pops for gem+ Lincolns have been exploding over the last 3-4 years which has over saturated the market and is killing the prices for much of the series. MS66 coins are dirt cheap and 67's will be soon as gradeflation keeps churing out 67+'s that will someday then get pushed to 68's.

Remember way back when when PCGS basically said there is no way we would grade cents like they are today...and yes, prices are crap all over now for MS 66 cents.

I wonder if a dozen PCGS MS66s were laid down among this MS67 and the inserts covered, how many would select it as the finest of the grouping?

One coin might have a larger grade number by one than the rest of the group but that does not necessarily mean that I would consider it the finest.

The coins was up to about $45k if I recall correctly in the pre-bidding. The reserve in the live auction was $75,000. I know someone who bought one way back when for about $50k who thought he got a great deal, didn't sell when the price was $130k, and now will hopefully get his money back.

    You're joking right? Bought a 67 for ~$50k and

. Yes the market overall is down in recent years but come on.

No one seemed to want the one in the auction for more then 45k plus the juice, I'm just saying that if he sold the coin now he might be in trouble.

    Thanks MacGE1 for the information.

So, the coin was reserved at 75% of the last sales price and failed to meet reserve. As a few on this thread have already suggested, this may spell trouble for the entire Lincoln Cent complex. And, yes, I know that coins like the 1953-P cent in MS67RD have already fallen from $20,000 to $2,000. But, those coins were always dismissed as "moderns" as their pops rose. The svdb is a different animal in my opinion and not hammering at $75,000 when the coin had been selling at $125,000 - $150,000....that is huge in my view. 'Watch out below"!!

If it was listed on eBay then you'd get some interest here. image
