When was the football mini helmet invented?

I am looking at picking up an autographed mini helmet of a player who died 1996. I remember them being popular in 1998 and on. Were they around in 1996?

I believe the OP refers to football helmets.

Just wanted to clarify, since for me any time I hear mini-helmets, my first instinct is to think back to childhood sundaes like these:

I remember an authenticated Mel Hein mini, it was generic and didnt have a giants logo but it was a miniture helmet. Hein died in 1992, to date its the earliest one ive seen.
